Chapter 16 — The Recording The room remained dark. May stood beside Travis. “Don't move,” she whispered. “I wasn't planning to.” A red light appeared above the door. A camera. Watching them. Then the intercom crackled. “You've always been difficult, May.” She looked toward the camera. “You're afraid of me.” A distorted laugh answered. “No. I'm afraid of what you remember.” Travis stepped forward. “Who are you?” Silence. Then: “Someone who knows what you did.” “What did I do?” “You survived.” The lights returned. May was gone. Travis turned. “May?” Nothing. The door suddenly unlocked. Hospital security rushed inside. “Dr. Hale!” “What happened?” “Where's the girl?” “I don't know.” The director appeared behind them. “We warned you.” Travis looked at him. “You know where she is.” The director said nothing. Later that evening, Travis returned to his apartment. A recording was waiting on his table. He pressed play. May's voice filled the room. “Travis, if you're hearing this, they found me.” His heart sank. “I knew they would.” She paused. “I didn't tell you everything because I didn't know who to trust.” The recording continued. “I need you to remember. Not for me. For everyone who disappeared.” A second voice interrupted. The director. “You should have stayed quiet.” May answered: “You should have been arrested years ago.” The recording ended. Travis immediately called the police. Before he could explain everything, his phone rang. “Dr. Hale?” “Yes?” “This is the police.” “What happened?” “We found May.” “Where?” “At your apartment.” Travis froze. “What?” “She was found inside.” He stared at his phone. “That isn't possible.” “Why?” “Because I'm at my apartment.” Silence. Then the officer said: “Dr. Hale…” “What?” “You need to come here immediately.”
