When Travis arrived, police surrounded his apartment.
May wasn't there.
Only her bag.
And the red notebook.
The police questioned him for hours.
“What is your relationship with May Carter?”
“Therapist and patient.”
“Were you involved with her before?”
“No.”
“Did she ever threaten you?”
“No.”
“Did you know he was alive?”
Travis hesitated.
“Yes.”
The officer wrote something down.
By morning, Travis was suspended.
The hospital director released a statement saying Travis had violated professional boundaries and interfered with an ongoing investigation.
Travis knew it was a lie.
Daniel met him outside the hospital.
“You're being blamed.”
“I know.”
“We need to find May.”
“She left this.”
Travis handed him the red notebook.
Daniel opened it.
A flash drive fell out.
They took it to a computer.
A folder appeared.
PROJECT THURSDAY — FINAL RECORDS.
Inside were hundreds of files.
One document had been highlighted.
SUBJECT: MAY CARTER.
Daniel stared.
“She wasn't the final subject.”
Travis looked at him.
“Who was?”
Daniel opened another file.
PROJECT SUPERVISOR: DR. TRAVIS HALE.
Travis went silent.
“This is fake.”
“I know.”
“But why?”
“Because someone wanted you blamed.”
“Voss.”
“Maybe.”
Daniel looked at the final file.
There was another name.
E. VOSS.
Then another.
HOSPITAL DIRECTOR.
Travis stared at the screen.
“They worked together.”
Daniel nodded.
“But May knew.”
A police car passed outside.
Daniel closed the laptop.
“We have to find her before they do.”
Three days passed.
No sign of May.
Then, late Thursday evening, Travis received a message.
I'M SAFE.
Another message followed.
DON'T COME LOOKING.
Travis stared at the screen.
Then a third message appeared.
NOT YET.
