Chapter 18 — Goodbye, Dr. Hale
May was found three days later.
She was safe.
Exhausted.
When Travis saw her, he wanted to ask a hundred questions.
Instead, he said:
“Are you okay?”
May nodded.
“I am now.”
They sat across from each other.
No hospital room.
No locked door.
No recording device.
Just two people talking.
“You can't continue treating me,” May said.
“I know.”
“The hospital won't allow it.”
“I don't work there anymore.”
She looked surprised.
“They accepted my resignation.”
“I heard.”
Silence.
May looked down.
“I ruined your career.”
“No.”
“I did.”
“No. They did.”
She looked at him.
For the first time, there was no professional distance to hide behind.
But Travis knew that didn't mean they could cross it.
Their history was too complicated.
“I think we should say goodbye,” May said.
He nodded.
“Maybe.”
She stood.
“Thank you.”
“For what?”
“For believing me when nobody else did.”
Travis smiled sadly.
“You made that difficult.”
“I know.”
She laughed quietly.
Then the smile disappeared.
“I don't want you waiting for me.”
“I won't.”
“Promise?”
“Promise.”
May walked toward the door.
Before leaving, she turned.
“Maybe one day…”
Travis waited.
“…we can meet as strangers.”
Then she left.
Travis remained seated.
The clock showed 3:00 PM.
For the first time, Thursday at three didn't feel like a threat.
It felt like an ending.
