CHAPTER 2: THE REFERRAL
The following Thursday, May arrived at 2:58.
Travis noticed.
“You're early.”
“I didn't want to be late.”
“Why?”
She shrugged.
“People remember when you're late.”
He gestured toward the chair.
“Same place?”
“Same place.”
May sat.
Travis opened his notebook.
“This week, I'd like to talk about the incident.”
“Which part?”
“The argument.”
May laughed quietly.
“That isn't what the school calls it.”
“What do they call it?”
“An altercation.”
“And what do you call it?”
“An accident.”
Travis waited.
May stared through the window.
“His name was Daniel.”
“Who?”
“The student.”
“Daniel what?”
“Daniel Reed.”
Travis wrote it down.
“What happened between you?”
“He followed me.”
“Why?”
“I don't know.”
“Did you know him?”
“Yes.”
“How well?”
May looked at him.
“Not well enough to trust him.”
Travis noticed something in her expression.
Fear.
It disappeared almost instantly.
“What did Daniel want?”
May's fingers tightened around the sleeve of her sweater.
“He wanted my notebook.”
“What notebook?”
She smiled.
“You'll find out.”
“May—”
“The school told you I attacked him, didn't they?”
“They said there was an argument.”
“They didn't tell you why.”
“No.”
“Of course they didn't.”
She stood.
Travis frowned.
“Where are you going?”
“Home.”
“Our session isn't finished.”
May looked at the clock.
3:23.
“I know.”
“Then why are you leaving?”
“Because that's enough for today.”
She reached the door.
“May.”
She stopped.
“Next Thursday,” Travis said, “I want you to bring the notebook.”
She turned.
For the first time, her expression became completely serious.
“I don't have it anymore.”
“Why?”
“Because someone took it.”
“Who?”
May opened the door.
“I think that's what you're supposed to find out.”
