Chapter 15 — The Seventh Thursday
May was waiting in Room 214.
The door stood open.
Travis stopped outside.
“You shouldn't be here.”
“I know.”
She looked around the room.
“This is where it started.”
Travis stepped inside.
“What happened?”
May touched the wall.
“I was brought here when I was young.”
“For treatment?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
“To watch.”
“Watch what?”
“People.”
She looked at him.
“People who wanted to understand what fear could do to memory.”
Travis felt sick.
“And you?”
“I remembered.”
“Everything?”
“Eventually.”
She sat on the old hospital bed.
“You weren't my therapist.”
Travis stared at her.
“What?”
“You were investigating the program.”
“So why did I think I was?”
“Because they wanted you to forget.”
“Who?”
May looked toward the ceiling camera.
“The people who still run this place.”
Travis followed her gaze.
“You said Voss did this.”
“He helped.”
“Helped?”
“He wasn't alone.”
“Who else?”
May didn't answer.
Instead, she reached into her bag.
She removed an old cassette recorder.
“You recorded this.”
She pressed play.
Young Travis's voice filled the room.
“I'm going to get you out.”
May closed her eyes.
Then another voice appeared.
Voss.
“You don't understand what you're interfering with.”
The recording stopped.
Travis stared at her.
“I promised to help you.”
“Yes.”
“What happened?”
“They took you.”
“And you?”
“I stayed.”
“Why?”
“Because someone had to remember.”
The clock above the door clicked.
3:00 PM.
May looked at it.
“Every Thursday at three, they brought someone here.”
“Why Thursday?”
“I don't know.”
Travis noticed tears in her eyes.
“May.”
She looked at him.
“I remembered one more thing.”
“What?”
“You weren't the only person who tried to help me.”
“Who else?”
May opened her mouth.
The lights went out.
A voice came through the intercom.
“Enough.”
May stood.
Travis reached for her.
The doors locked.
The voice continued.
“Dr. Hale, you should have forgotten.”
