Chapter 3 — Seven Rules
By the third Thursday, Travis had created a list.
May Carter — Seven Rules
Never ask her the same question twice.
Never assume she's telling the truth.
Watch her hands when she becomes quiet.
Don't mention Daniel unless necessary.
Don't discuss the missing notebook.
Don't allow her to control the session.
Never forget that May is afraid.
The seventh rule was the one that bothered him.
May didn't look afraid.
She looked fearless.
That afternoon, she entered carrying a small black notebook.
Travis stared at it.
“You said you didn't have it.”
“I said I didn't have my notebook.”
She placed it on the table.
“This one belongs to Daniel.”
Travis didn't touch it.
“Where did you get that?”
“He gave it to me.”
“When?”
“Before the incident.”
“Why?”
May smiled.
“Because he knew something was going to happen.”
Travis finally picked it up.
The first page contained only a date.
October 17.
The next page contained three words.
Thursday. Three o'clock.
Travis looked at May.
“Why does Daniel have my appointment time?”
May didn't answer.
He turned the page.
Another sentence.
She'll tell him everything.
Travis's stomach tightened.
“Who wrote this?”
May's voice was barely audible.
“Daniel.”
“About whom?”
She pointed at the sentence.
“Read it again.”
He did.
Then he turned another page.
There was a photograph taped inside.
It showed the hospital.
Travis recognized the building immediately.
But the photograph had been taken years ago.
On the back, someone had written:
Room 214.
May watched him.
“You wanted to know what happened at school.”
“Yes.”
“You're looking in the wrong place.”
