Chapter 11 — The Red Notebook May arrived carrying a red notebook. She placed it on Travis's desk. “I think you should read this.” He stared at it. “What is it?” “My memories.” He opened the cover. The first page contained three words. Every Thursday at 3. The handwriting looked familiar. He turned the page. Photographs had been taped inside. Old photographs. The hospital. Room 214. A group of people standing outside the building. Then Travis. Much younger. Standing beside a hospital bed. Beside him was a young May. Travis stopped breathing. “That isn't possible.” “I know.” “Why am I here?” “You were assigned to investigate.” “Investigate what?” “Project Thursday.” The words sounded unreal. May sat across from him. “It wasn't supposed to be a normal treatment program. They were studying trauma and memory.” “On children?” May looked away. “They called it research.” Travis turned another page. There were names. Seven students. Beside each name were dates. Some had been marked TRANSFERRED. Others DISCHARGED. One simply said: MISSING. “Emily Ross,” Travis whispered. May nodded. “She asked questions.” “What happened to her?” “She disappeared.” Travis looked at the photographs again. “Why don't I remember any of this?” “Because they erased it.” He looked up sharply. “Who?” “Professor Voss.” Travis shook his head. “Voss wasn't here.” “He was.” “How do you know?” “Because I saw him.” The room became silent. May touched the photograph of Travis. “You tried to help me.” “Then what happened?” “You found out what they were doing.” “And?” “They made you forget.” Travis stared at the photograph. A strange sense of grief filled him. “Why did you come back?” May looked at him. “Because I remembered.” “Everything?” “No.” She gave a sad smile. “Enough.” Travis closed the notebook. “What happened on the final Thursday?” May's expression changed. “They took you away.” “Who?” She looked toward the door. Before answering, she whispered: “The same people who are watching us now.”
