Chapter 04

1029 Words
“Are you leaving me?” Sarah asked the moment she opened her eyes to meet Kyle dressing up in a white shirt and dark blue pants, Hearing her voice, he turned around while adjusting his necktie and watched as she rose up from the bed, coming over to him, Slowly, Sarah raised her hand to his necktie, and began adjusting it instead, “What if I told you I want to be yours forever, Kyle?” She murmured, and just as fast as the words came out, Kyle held her hand, stopping them from moving on his tie, “We talked about this, Sarah. I can't divorce Sabrina, and I won't leave you either.” “You can't divorce her because you love her? Or because you're still using her?” Sarah asked, clutching her fingers by her side as she waited for him to give an answer but for a second, she saw a flicker of hesitation in his eyes before he responded, “I don't love her, Sarah. I love you instead.” “Then why won't you make me your wife and divorce her?” She drew closer to him and planted a soft kiss on his lips, “I was in a coma for 18 months and all I could think about was you, Kyle. I love you so much, and without you, I have no reason to live.” Gently, Kyle rubbed her hair and pulled her into his warm embrace as tears rolled down her face. Although his heart broke for Sarah so much, it didn't change the fact that even her tears couldn't move him enough to divorce Sabrina. But still, he was going to deny the feelings that had been clawing their way until the end because to him, those little tingling sensations whenever he thought about Sabrina weren't real. He wasn't in love with her. • THE NEXT DAY Sabrina stared at the papers, but she didn't cry. Instead, she waited patiently until she heard Kyle's car honk as he drove into the house. She sucked a deep breath in and rose to her feet, heading out of the room to the living room. When Sabrina got to the living room, Kyle was seated on the three-seater couch with a loose tie, and his suit jacket was draped over the back of the couch, He hadn't noticed her presence until she spoke, “Let's get a divorce, Kyle.” Slowly, Kyle lifted his head from the file in his hand, and as his fingers loosened around it a bit. He raised his gaze to her and spotted the paper, “W…what did you just say?” Sabrina swallowed hard as a part of her wanted to take back that word, but a greater part of her simply also wanted to let go of something that was never going to be hers. She was done loving a man who loved someone else, “I said, let's get a divorce, and I want nothing from you. No assets, no alimony." Kyle didn't utter a word, “Here's the divorce papers. You can sign and I'll have it processed as soon as possible. After that, I'll leave.” Sabrina moved forward, and dropped the papers on the table right in front of him along with a pen, and when he stared at the large bold-written words at the heading of the paper, (DIVORCE AGREEMENT) A tiny pang of pain gripped him. For a second, Sabrina saw hesitation flicker in his eyes before he picked up the pen and drew his name on the paper, “Done.” She had prepared herself for this when she asked the lawyer to prepare the papers, but then, nothing compared to the real pain of watching him draw his signature without the hesitation she thought she saw seconds ago. Instead, it was enough to make her realize that all the two years she spent as his wife meant nothing to him as it did to her. Fighting back tears from escaping her eyes, Sabrina swallowed the pain at the back of her throat and picked up the paper, She stared at it, giving the drawing of his signature one last look before turning around to walk away, “I’ll make the announcement of the divorce to your family, Sabrina. I need a few days to do that.” She paused, but didn't turn around to look at him. He could do whatever he wanted, she didn't care, and besides, her family was going to be over the moon, especially Sarah. “Okay.” She muttered and instantly walked away. As soon as Sabrina got to her room, she broke down in tears, clutching the paper to her abdomen A ragged gasp tore from her throat and she felt a tightness that stole the air out of her lungs. Hurrying towards the nightstand with unsteady steps and one hand clawing at her collar as if she could physically rip the pressure away, Sabrina yanked the drawer open and grabbed the familiar small white container. She popped the lid with shaking thumbs and forced a single capsule down her dry throat in one frantic swallow. Tears prickled hot behind her eyes as the tightness began to ease inch by inch, she let out a deep breath before falling to the bed. This was the first time in two long years she had no choice but to rely on her drugs, and it was on the day she finally let go of the man who had been keeping the shattered pieces of her life together. And now, that man was gone too. Sabrina quickly picked up her phone from the bed and dialed Lauren's number. Once the call was answered, she let out a deep breath, “It's done,” “I'll book the flight ticket just like you requested, Sabrina, and you can start a new life by putting yourself first.” “Thank you, Lauren!” As soon as the call ended, Sabrina fell flat on the bed and shut her eyes so she could cage the last memories with Kyle into the depths of her mind.
