Chapter 01

“Happy birthday Ms. Thompson.” The cook, Cheryl, greeted, holding a six-inch strawberry and vanilla-coated cake in her hand. Sabrina tilted her head to Cheryl before forcing a smile that didn't seem to tally with the expression on her face, “Thank you.” She managed to murmur, and when Cheryl dropped the cake right in front of the table before Sabrina, she blew out the candles and closed her eyes for a moment, “What did you wish for?” Sabrina didn't utter a word, but her silence said it all, “Oh dear…” “He's not going to be here again?” She murmured, voice cracking and tears burning at the back of her eyes but as heartbreaking as it was, Cheryl shook her head in the negative, “I'm sorry.” Sabrina bit her lower lip, silently counting down to the second her tears were going to fall, “But Mr. Thompson asked me to give you this to celebrate your 25th birthday. He hopes you like it, and he promised he would be back from the hospital tonight to celebrate with you.” Cherly uttered, dropping a medium-sized box right on the table. “If you don't mind, I'll go prepare lunch and dinner, Ms. Thompson.” As soon as Cheryl left, Sabrina finally let go of her tears as she stared at the box right in front of her. Her heart shattered even more when she realized that the man she had loved for eight years and had sacrificed everything for wasn't in love with her. Instead, he was in love with someone else. Her twin sister, Sarah. Two years ago, Sarah was supposed to get married to Kyle. They were college sweethearts, but a fatal accident drove her into a coma and when given the offer to marry Kyle in her sister's place, Sabrina took it, hoping along the line, he would learn to love her. To her, fate was aligning with her dream. Today was her birthday, which also meant today was Sarah's birthday, and not only Kyle, but her whole family was with Sarah, and they had totally forgotten it was her birthday too. She stretched her hand to reach for the box and opened it. Inside it, a dazzling diamond necklace worth thousands of dollars stared back at her, but Sabrina didn't smile or even flinch at the beauty of it. It was exactly the same. The same gift she had repeatedly received from Kyle every year on her birthday which only confirmed to her that he was never always the one who picked out the gift, but someone else. That only reminded her of how little she meant to him. Rubbing the tears off her face, Sabrina rose to her feet with the box in her hand and headed for her room. As soon as she got in, she found her way to the closest and slipped it into the box along with all the other ones she had received from Kyle on all the other days he considered special without ever being there with her. Every single one of those days, he was with Sarah instead. The pink diamond necklace was their wedding anniversary gift from him The gold set of jewelry was a gift because he hadn't come home for one week and decided to apologize with a present instead of words The diamond rings were to make up for leaving her in the cold all night when she had brought a meal for him at his office and he forgot to take her back home. And lastly, the watches were on days he lost his temper and lashed out at her over not receiving any good news concerning Sarah's treatment. Every gift not only had a memory, but carried its own scars. With a sigh, Sabrina shut the drawer and walked over to the bed. She could only hope that one day, just one day, something might change in his heart, and he would start to look at her the way he always looked at her sister. ~~ Night came by so quickly, and when Sabrina woke up from the sleep she had dozed off in hours ago, she got herself dressed up nicely, still hoping that Kyle would keep his promise and return home tonight to celebrate with her. Another hour passed by, but there was still no sign of Kyle's car riding into the mansion through her window Sabrina quickly draped her nightwear's jacket over her body and headed downstairs. She stared at the huge wall clock in the living room before heading for the door There was less than thirty minutes before the day ended. Mentally, she calculated the time without staring at her phone, and exactly thirty-five minutes later, she summoned up the courage and finally stared at her phone. Five minutes past 12, which meant the day was over. One last call across to Kyle without an answer was all it took to shatter the remaining shred of hope Sabrina had, and so with a disappointment that made her heart bleed, she headed back to her room and slammed the door shut She rushed over to her lower drawer, slid it open, and took out the half-bottle of vodka that had been left untouched for a couple of days, Three glasses later, Sabrina broke into heartbreaking tears, clutching an empty glass to her chest as the room spun around her, “Sabrina!” She heard, but didn't budge, “Sabrina! What the hell!” When Sabrina turned around, she was shocked to see Kyle walking over to her, “Kyle… You came…” She didn't mind if he arrived twenty minutes later. As long as he was here, it made her happy “Have you been drinking? I've got something important to tell….” Before he could continue, Sabrina gently placed her warm palm on his cheek, silencing him in the process, “I'm… still so glad you came, Kyle.” “What happened….” Sabrina didn't wait. She leaned forward, raising her feet and when she reached his level, she slammed her lips on his, and broke the kiss exactly ten seconds later to feel the warm tingling sensation that melted in her heart, and the butterflies that rumbled in her stomach, “S..stay with me tonight, Kyle. I never ask for anything, but today I will.” He stared at her, confused, his eyes trying to read the emotion dripping from her eyes and the sudden courage that made him curious, “I… I want you to make love to me, Kyle. That's all I ask.”
