Wes
The day that Danny scented Jocelyn, I knew things were going to change. We had been on our way to the fair, the one and only time that I had ever gone to one, when he scented her. We had been in the woods out skirting the fair and my mouth watered from the scent of all of the greasy, fried food being cooked in there.
Danny had gotten money from a little side job he did and I pestered him into taking me because the scents of the fair hit me in the small shack we called our home for two years.
He had winced when I asked, and looked at me with solemn eyes. "If we go, you have to be on your best behavior. You can't let any of your wolf instincts overwhelm you if someone jostles into you or anything."
I remember promising him that I would behave. Then we got dressed in the best clothes we had, which wasn't much, but it was an occasion. We were going out to have fun. I could already taste the food, much better than the potted meats and noodles Danny would buy us whenever he had the chance.
Also better than the rabbits Arlo and Onyx hunted. We were so close when Danny stopped dead in his tracks and everything changed. We stood in the woods for what seemed like an eternity. I watched with longing as people went in and out of the fair, carrying giant corn dogs and delicious smelling sugar coated cakes.
But he just stood there, with his fists clenched, sniffing the air in deep gulps.
I didn't ask him what was happening. I never questioned him, if I thought that he scented trouble.
But after a couple of hours of agony, just standing there, I placed my hand on his arm and he turned to me with Onyx's eyes, dark and full of something I had never seen before.
"What is it?"
"We can't go in."
My hopes were dashed and I stared at him, angry for the first time ever at my brother.
"You said we could go. I want to go!"
Onyx's eyes sank back and I was met with a mournful look from Danny. "I...we can't. I'm sorry, Wes. I...I'll explain later. Let's take you home."
It was later, after he left me at home, my stomach grumbling and angry, that he came back looking like complete and utter sh*t.
"What happened?" Because he had left me to go back, without an explanation.
He stood at the door of our shack, his fists clenching and unclenching, his breaths hard and his eyes wild.
"My mate." He whispered.
It was when everything changed.
Irena wasn't my mate. I knew that. If anything, she was the complete opposite of my mate. Arlo wanted nothing to do with her and he hid in my mind anytime she was around. And...I kind of liked it. Not that he was afraid, but that I wasn't chained to a woman like Danny was. Not like Jocelyn was bad. I loved Jocelyn now more than ever. She was the best big sister anyone could ask for, and I wouldn't change finding her for the world, but maybe if Danny had told me about her when we were together in the forest, maybe things would have been different.
Being around Irena since we met at the party was... different. She was gorgeous. The most beautiful woman I had ever met, even when she only wore sweat pants and a giant T-shirt, she still oozed s*x appeal.
We hung out every day since the night I walked her home. I didn't make a move on her that night, mostly out of fear, but I don't think she minded. We talked. A lot. More than I had ever talked to another female that wasn't my family. More than I had ever talked to Emily.
I told her about Danny. I told her about what happened to my pack, not too long ago and about my family. All she had to do was ask, and I gave her every but of information she wanted. And...it felt good. And she told me things too.
She told me about her home, on an island that had been deemed too dangerous for inhabitants, due to deadly snakes.
It was off the coast of Brazil and she lived there with her mother and sisters. I asked about her father or brothers, but she just smiled at that and didn't say anything about that. But she liked to talk about her mother and sisters, so she usually stayed on that subject the most.
And she ate a lot. Irena, after coaxing me the first few days of meeting each other, would take me to seafood restaurants everyday and would gorge herself with everything. She was smart and funny and had the most musical laugh, that would soothe my brain in the strangest ways.
I didn't expect to like her. I had hoped, after we stopped at her dorm room that she would forget about me and let me do what I came here to do, but when she turned to go into her room, she looked back at me with bright eyes and asked for my phone.
I gave it to her, without a second thought and she called herself from it and put her name in my contacts.
"So we can hang out." She winked at me and after that I felt dazed as I walked back to my room.
Now we were hanging out in her room, eating and doing homework. I thought hanging out with her would be more....exciting. But I was kind of glad that she was content on just lounging around and not wanting to go out on a Friday night.
"So Wes, tell me, how many girls have you been with?"
I feel the heat rising up to my cheeks and ears and look up at her. Her green eyes shine under her glasses and even though I'm embarrassed, I can't help but tell her.
"None. Girlfriends, one. But I haven't been with anyone."
"Gay?" She tilts her head to the side and I shake my head.
"No. Just... uninterested, I guess."
She smiles as my heart stutters in my chest. "Holding out for a special girl?"
I shrug. "Not really, no."
"Not even your fated?"
I make a face and shake my head. "I don't...I don't want one."
She raises her eyebrows."That's surprising. That's all I hear anyone talk about around here. Finding their fated or just messing around until they find them."
I shrug again. "You?"
"Men?"
"Yeah."
"Too many to count if you want me to be honest."
I don't judge her. Men sleep around whenever they please, why can't women?
"That's cool. Have you eaten any afterwards?"
She laughs, her musical laugh, throwing her head back revealing a smooth, beautiful neckand I close my eyes to listen to it. It never gets old.
"No. I already told you, delicacy, remember? Reserved mostly when I'm home and men are lost at sea."
"Mostly?" I quirk my eyebrow at her and she smirks.
"I like to have a little fun every now and then." She winks and Arlo growls in my head. He absolutely loathes this girl, but it's okay. It just means that she isn't an attachment to me. "So...do you plan on losing your virginity?"
I sigh, my blush reappearing and I shrug. "I guess when it happens it happens. It's not like I'm looking."
She puts her pen down where she was sitting on the ground, leaning against her bed. I watch her as she crawls to me, my heart thundering in my chest. I swallow hard at the playful smile on her face. Maybe going out would have been a better idea.
"Are you looking now?"
She had on a big t-shirt that opened up at the neck as she crawled to me. Her breasts, braless, could be seen through the small opening and I closed my eyes. My cheeks felt warm and I took a deep breath.
"I don't know." I told her truthfully. I felt her hands on my jean clad knees and I opened my eyes again. She was kneeling in front of me, her multicolored nails tickling my legs as they moved up my thighs slowly.
"Just how much of a virgin are you?"
I take a shaky breath. "Just s*x. I-I've done other things."
"With the girlfriend?"
I nod and she grins, her sharp teeth on display.
"So this isn't anything new?"
One of her hand stops at my hardening length and I shake my head. Her eyes...I can't take my eyes off of them. I forget to breathe for a few seconds and maybe it's because of Arlo's deep growls or because of the glint of the light on her teeth, I snap out of whatever trance I'm in and place my hand over hers.
"I...We can be friends, Irena. I don't...I'm not ready for anything else right now."
She pouts, but removes her hands and stares at me. She looks upset and my chest caves in at the guilt I feel for upsetting her. I like her. I don't want to lose her as a friend. She has been a constant for me this last week and school didn't seem so bad.
Before I can open my mouth to take it all back, her dorm door opens and her roommate walks into the room. She's a tall, leggy blonde wolf with blue eyes, kind of like Josh's, but lighter. I had met her only once before today, after picking Irena up from her room to go for lunch.
I couldn't remember her name. Miranda? Maribel. Something with an 'M'. I knew that much.
She stops in the doorway, eyes wide and I blush. I'm nearly at full mast and Irena is still in between my legs. I grab my notebook and place it in my lap and she smirks, her eyes brightening.
She's very pretty. Almost as if Irena had read my thoughts, she scowls.
"Kayla, I told you I was having a friend over." She snaps. Her eyes flash and I swallow hard.
Makayla. That was her name.
The girls flicks her eyes to Irena and then shrugs and slings her backpack onto her bed, that I was leaning against.
"Sorry, I must have forgotten. Hey wolf boy, want to grab your sh*t off of my bed?"
I scramble and get my backpack. I pick up all of my books and cram them in and stand up.
Irena is fuming and when she stands, despite her being as short as Elena, she looks dangerous. Her teeth look sharper as she bares them at Makayla and I wince.
Makayla merely smiles at her, her eyes cold as I brush past her to the door.
"I'll go. Hang out tomorrow? My dorm?"
Irena's murderous face changes, as she smiles at me and nods. "Sure. Your bear roommate going to be there?"
I shrug. "I can ask him not to be."
She slinks over and throws her arms around me, laying her head on my chest. She can probably hear my heart thudding pathetically against her ear.
"Good. Then I'll see you tomorrow."
I smile at her and then glance at Makayla who smiles at her and waves her fingers in my direction. I'm not stupid enough to piss Irena off by waving back at her, so instead I turn and leave before anything else can happen.
