Wes
Things changed slightly after the bonfire. For one thing, I had a girlfriend. A girlfriend that I didn't want, but I didn't know how to get rid of without hurting her feelings.
I also acquired a group of wolf friends who wanted to hang out with me despite having a new girlfriend. Adler and his roommate looked me up after the bonfire, and we hung out for part of the day after classes.
"Hey, did you hear about the girl that went missing?" I raised my eyebrows as I brought a fry up to my mouth and shook my head.
"No, what happened?"
Adler leaned back in his seat and shrugged. "All I heard was that a girl never got back to her dorm last night and hasn't answered anyone's messages. Her purse was found this morning at the bonfire near the water, but no sign of her."
I frowned. "Damn. Any idea who she is?"
Adler shrugged again and took a sip of his drink. " Too early to tell. Maybe she just got drunk and stayed with some dude. Her roommate may be making a big deal out of it."
I nod. Carl reaches over to my plate and nabs a fry and shrugs. "I think so. Anyways, do you want to hang out tonight, or are you with your girl?"
I sigh and shake my head. "I have that study group with Kelsie.Irena may get mad, though, so i may skip out on it."
Carl snickers and shakes his head. "F*ck being in a relationship. I just want to be single and f*ck whoever I want before my mate shows up."
I make a face at that and shake my head. "I don't know what the big fuss about a mate is."
"Dude, it's finding someone that was tailor-made for you. You don't want that?"
I shake my head slowly. "Not really. I've seen how crazy it is and makes you have a mate. My brother died for his, and my other brother started a damn war for his so...I'd rather not."
Carl reached for another fry, and I growled at him. He smirked and dropped his hand. Adler leaned back in his chair and groaned. "I'm hoping my mate is a girl from my pack. Her name is Fiona. Sweet face and cute, perky t*ts. Perfect, little ass and deadly as hell. She just turned eighteen this summer, and I'm about to be eighteen in a week. I'm hoping I show up to the pack, and it's her."
I snort and shake my head. "I hope I don't find mine."
Adler shakes his head. "What a miserable life. But I guess mine would be kind of hard, too. Fiona is with my best friend back home. Imagine coming home and being with your best friend's girl?"
I shake my head, and Carl grins. "You'd be getting his sloppy seconds."
Adler frowns and shrugs. "Yeah, but ultimately, she'd be mine, and Derek will just have to deal."
"Would she choose you over him?" I ask him, curious. Adler sighs and shrugs. "I don't know. They've been together since they were twelve. But I think the bond is stronger than even that, don't you?"
Carl snorts. "If anyone could hear us talking, they'd make us hand our male cards over right here and now. We're in college, let's forget about mates until it happens and think about all of the fresh p*ssy we can get into until then."
I grin and nod. Adler shrugs and grabs his drink. "Speaking of fresh p*ssy, how is your little siren?"
I looked up from my phone, which had just buzzed from a text from Irena. I sigh at her message and answer it quickly before tucking my phone in my pocket.
"She's good. At least, I think she is. She looked sick last night. And this morning, she was throwing up. She just asked me to come by the dorm."
Adler nods. "I'll come with. My sister is there. I can check in on her and make sure she isn't sick as well."
I nod with a smile, and we say our goodbyes to Carl as we make our way back to the dorms.
"Tell me about the girl from your pack. Do you think she will leave her boyfriend if you are her mate?"
Adler chuckles and shakes his head slowly. "Not sure. I mean, I've heard of how potent the bond is, but they've been together forever. He asked her out before I ever had the chance to and...I think he already rejected his mate."
I raise my eyebrows, shocked. I mean, I know that i have always said I would reject mine, but I haven't really heard of it happening all that often.
"What do you mean?"
Adler digs his hands in his pockets and bites his lip. "There's this girl, a maid, that works in the laundry room at the packhouse. When Derek turned eighteen and we got home from celebrating his birthday, he started acting weird, and I followed him to a room in the servants' quarters. It was hers." He winces and shakes his head.
"She opened her bedroom door before we even got to it, and...we'll Derek freaked out. The next day, I found the girl crying in a closet. I don't know if he did or not, but he never said anything to me about it since then, and he continued to see Fiona."
I grimace and sigh. "I don't know. From what I've heard, once you find your mate, you can't be intimate with anyone else. It's like gross or something. "
"That's the thing, I don't think he and Fi were doing anything, especially after she found out she wasn't his mate. I left before anything else, but I talked to him before I did, and he said he intended to make her his chosen."
I felt bad for the maid and sighed. We got to the dorms, and I shook my head. "That socks. I hope he doesn't go through with it until you get home and see for yourself if you're her mate or not."
He nods. "Me too. And she wouldn't be a bad mate to have. She's the Alpha's daughter and cute as all hell. I liked her for a long time since we were pups before he moved to the pack, but he asked her out before I could."
"Did he know?"
Adler frowns. "Yeah."
"That's f*cked up."
Adler shrugs. "He's the Beta's son. It made sense for them to be together. Now that I know they're not mates, though, maybe I've got a shot."
I nod. "Good luck with that."
He grins and nods. "And you're sure you don't want to find yours?"
I frown and shake my head. "Positive."
We stood in front of Irena and Makayla's dorm room, and I knocked. When the door was answered, I raised my eyebrows at how sh*tty Irena looked. She had dark circles under her eyes, and her nose was pink and runny. She was still beautiful, and it was kind of weird seeing her so out of sorts but kind of refreshing. Like she was normal.
She smiled at me and even her usually sparkling teeth looked dull. I smiled back at her and wrapped my arms around her. Adler pushed past us and went and laid on his sister's bed with her on it. She growled and pushed him off and Irena and I both laughed.
"You okay?" I ask Irena. She nods and buries her face in my shirt. She inhales deeply.
"I am now."
"Take her with you. She's been coughing half of the night and I can't f*cking sleep."
I raise my eyebrows and look at the lump that was Makayla on her bed. Irena frowns. "Sorry." She murmurs and Adler scoots his sister over and sits on the edge of the bed. Makayla sticks her head up and her hair is a nest on the top of her head.
"Irena, you look like dog sh*t, I'm telling you now. If you don't go get seen and you keep me up for the rest of the night, I'm going to put a pillow on your face."
Adler turns to her with wide eyes and Irena coughs out a laugh. "Wes will take me, won't you baby?"
I nod quickly, looking after Kayla and Adler with a warning. Adler glares at his sister. My main concern is that Irena doesn't take Makayla seriously.
"Yeah, get some shoes on and we can go to the campus clinic."
Irena nods and walks back into her room. Adler leans back against his sister and she shoves at him before she relents and just leaves him alone.
"Derek marked Fiona." She murmurs to Adler.
Adler turns to his sister quickly. "What?"
The alarm in his voice was evident and I winced.
"Cindy called me and everyone at training saw her mark. Only they don't look like a happy couple."
Adler grits his teeth. "Why didn't he wait?"
"He's not your friend. I've told you this for years. He acts nice, but Derek is...He's a bad guy."
Adler purses his lips and at that point I kind of feel bad for him. "Ready?"
I nod and smile down at Irena's sad attempt to put herself together. She had her hair up in a ponytail, but it does nothing to hide how dry her hair looks.
"Yeah."
We walk out and I wave bye to Adler. He just tilts his chin at me before I shut the door. "Wolf shifter drama. Isn't it beautiful?" Irena smiles and then covers her mouth with a barking cough.
"Are you okay?" I ask her as I pat her back.
Irena finally catches her breath and shrugs. "I don't know. I feel like crap."
I nod and lead her to the clinic, stopping every few minutes to let her catch her breath and have her coughing fits. Whatever she has, I hope I don't catch it. I feel bad for thinking it, but she looks like death.
When we finally get to the clinic, we sign her in and sit in the waiting room for her to be called. There are a sh*t ton of students milling around and I hear people chatting.
"They found her." I hear a girl whisper quietly.
"Yeah, I heard she had a chunk of her hair missing. Fish or her attacker?"
"Fish aren't going to feast on a body that quickly. "
"Body?" I ask, because I can't help myself.
The two girls who were talking about the missing girl look at me and nod gravely. "Yeah, she was found a few miles away from where the bonfire was at. We don't know what happened for sure, but they're saying she was murdered."
I raise my eyebrows."Who was she?"
Irena's name is called and she squeezes my hand. I stand up with her but I'm still curious, so I trail after her slowly, waiting for an answer.
"Kelsie Stevens." I frown.
"Bear?" I ask. Irena yanks my hand hard and a girl nods.
"Yeah."
My stomach drops and I take a deep breath. I walk with Irena, thinking of the pretty girl that I had just seen the night before, full of life. We had plans today for a study session.
It's all I could think about as Irena spoke to the Healer and I tried to listen, but I couldn't think of anything else.
