The Intruder

Richard’s words echoed through the office. “…Tell George Kingston that I’m here to take back what’s mine.” The room fell silent. Alyssa looked from Richard to George. For the first time since she had met him, George’s calm expression cracked. Only for a second. Then it disappeared. He grabbed his suit jacket from the chair. “Where is he?” “Security Holding Room B.” George walked toward the door without another word. Alyssa instinctively followed. “Mr. Kingston?” He stopped. “This doesn’t concern you.” “But” “It concerns my family.” His tone wasn’t rude. It was final. Richard quickly stepped beside Alyssa. “Miss Monroe, if you’ll wait here—” “No.” George interrupted without turning around. He looked at Alyssa. “Come with me.” Richard blinked. “Sir?” George ignored him. “You’re planning my wedding.” “If this becomes public…” “…you need to understand what you’re walking into.” The private elevator descended in complete silence. Alyssa could hear nothing except the soft hum of the cables. She stole a glance at George. His jaw was clenched. His hands were buried in his pockets. Whatever confidence he had shown upstairs… …was gone. “Are you okay?” He didn’t answer immediately. Finally “No.” It was such an honest answer that it caught her off guard. “You know this person?” “I don’t know.” “You don’t know… or you don’t remember?” George slowly looked at her. For a brief moment, something flickered in his eyes. Pain. Then the elevator doors opened. The security floor was nothing like the luxurious offices above. Gray walls. Bright fluorescent lights. Uniformed guards. One guard hurried over. “Mr. Kingston.” George nodded. “Where is he?” “This way.” As they walked down the corridor, Alyssa noticed two security officers whispering. “…never seen Mr. Kingston look like this…” “…whoever that man is, he’s dangerous…” The guard unlocked a heavy steel door. Inside… The room was empty. Everyone froze. George frowned. “What happened?” The guard’s face turned white. “He…” “…he was here.” Another guard rushed into the room. “Sir!” “He escaped.” “What?” “We reviewed the cameras.” The guard’s voice shook. “He somehow disabled the hallway cameras for exactly forty-three seconds.” George’s expression hardened. “Did anyone see his face?” “No.” “What about fingerprints?” “He wore gloves.” “What did he leave behind?” The guard swallowed. “Nothing.” George looked around the room. Nothing… Except… A single playing card lying in the middle of the floor. A king of spades. George slowly bent down and picked it up. His face changed instantly. Alyssa noticed. “You’ve seen this before.” George quietly slipped the card into his pocket. “No.” “You just lied.” His eyes met hers. For several seconds… Neither spoke. Finally, George sighed. “Miss Monroe.” “Yes?” “There are some questions…” “…that are safer left unanswered.” Before she could respond— Richard’s phone rang. He answered immediately. His expression darkened. He lowered the phone slowly. “Sir…” George turned. “What now?” Richard hesitated. “You need to see the news.” He held out the phone. A breaking news banner flashed across the screen. BREAKING: Billionaire George Kingston’s Wedding Planner at the Center of New Scandal. Attached to the article… Was a security photograph. Not of Alyssa. Not of George. But of the mysterious intruder. His face was hidden beneath a black cap. Yet one thing was unmistakable. Across the bottom of the article was the headline: WHO IS THE MAN CLAIMING TO BE GEORGE KINGSTON? George’s grip tightened around the phone. Alyssa’s breath caught in her throat. “What… does that mean?” George didn’t answer. Because for the first time… He didn’t know. George stared at the phone for several seconds before handing it back to Richard. “Take it down.” Richard frowned. “Sir?” “The article.” “I don’t want his face online.” “It’ll only make people curious.” Richard immediately nodded. “I’ll call legal.” He hurried away. Silence settled over the hallway. Alyssa looked at George. “You know him.” George’s eyes remained fixed on the empty holding room. “No.” “You recognized the playing card.” “I said no.” His voice wasn’t angry. It was exhausted. Alyssa decided not to push. For now. Outside the security office… Rain had begun falling again. George stood beneath the building’s entrance, watching employees rush past with umbrellas. Alyssa stepped beside him. “I should probably go.” He nodded absentmindedly. Then suddenly asked, “Why did you become a wedding planner?” The question caught her completely off guard. She smiled faintly. “My parents never had a wedding.” George looked at her. “My dad died before they could afford one.” “My mom used to tell me that love didn’t need expensive flowers.” She laughed softly. “But when I got older…” “I wanted to give people the wedding she never had.” George listened without interrupting. “So every wedding…” “…is really for your mother.” Alyssa looked surprised. “I’ve never thought about it that way.” “But…” She smiled sadly. “I guess you’re right.” George looked away toward the rain. “My mother hated weddings.” Alyssa blinked. “Hated them?” “She used to say…” His voice became distant. “…they only create promises people can’t keep.” He stopped himself. Almost as if he’d said too much. Alyssa noticed. “Did she pass away?” George didn’t answer. Instead— His phone vibrated. Richard. George answered immediately. “What?” Richard sounded breathless. “We’ve identified the car the intruder used.” George’s expression hardened. “Where?” “It was abandoned.” “Any evidence?” “Just one.” “What?” Richard hesitated. “There was a photograph.” George froze. “What photograph?” “A family photo.” George’s breathing slowed. “Send it to me.” Seconds later… His phone buzzed. He opened the image. A faded photograph. A woman stood smiling. She held the hand of a little boy. The woman’s face had been torn away. Only the little boy remained. George’s fingers trembled. Alyssa noticed. “What is it?” He quickly locked the screen. “Nothing.” “It obviously isn’t nothing.” Before he could answer— A black SUV pulled up beside them. The rear window rolled down. Inside sat Victor Kingston. Impeccably dressed. Silver-haired. Sharp eyes that missed nothing. He looked directly at George. “Get in.” George didn’t move. Victor smiled. “Unless you’d rather discuss family matters…” His eyes shifted toward Alyssa. “…in front of strangers.” George’s jaw tightened. He turned to Alyssa. “I’ll have Richard take you home.” “What about the wedding?” “We’ll continue tomorrow.” He stepped toward the SUV. Before getting in, he looked back at her. For just a second. His expression softened. “Miss Monroe.” “Yes?” “Be careful who you trust.” The SUV drove away. Alyssa stood motionless beneath the rain. Something about that conversation… Didn’t feel like advice. It felt like a warning. ⸻ Across the street… A man watched everything from inside a parked sedan. A baseball cap hid most of his face. He lowered a pair of binoculars. On the passenger seat beside him lay the missing King of Spades. He smiled faintly. “So…” he murmured. “You’ve finally come home, George.” He started the engine. Then reached into his jacket. Removing a worn leather wallet. Inside was an old birth certificate. The name at the top had been burned away. Only one word remained visible. …Kingston. He closed the wallet. Drove into the traffic. And disappeared.
