Gina stood in the doorway, her heart sinking at the sight of Marcus and his family still occupying the living room as if nothing had changed.
Their gazes turned towards her as she entered, their expressions filled with curiosity and disgust.
"Where have you been?" Evelyn's voice cut through the silence, her tone icy and accusatory.
Gina took a deep breath, summoning the last shreds of her composure. "My grandmother passed away," she replied evenly, her voice trembling slightly with emotion.
There was a moment of silence, broken only by the ticking of the clock on the wall. Then, Thomas scoffed dismissively. "Always with the excuses," he muttered under his breath.
Olivia's lip curled in a sneer. "You think you can just disappear and then come back as if nothing happened?" she taunted.
Gina felt a surge of anger rise within her. "I just lost my grandmother," she said, her voice shaking with suppressed emotion. "And none of you even care."
Richard's voice was cold and cutting. "Why should we care? You've done nothing but bring trouble into our family."
Marcus remained silent, his jaw clenched tightly as he watched the scene unfold. His eyes bore into Gina's, filled with disappointment and resentment.
Gina's face hardened in that moment. She couldn't take it anymore—the constant judgment, the hostility. She had tried to fit into Marcus's world, to win his family's acceptance, but it was clear now that it was a battle she could never win.
Without another word, Gina turned on her heel and walked away, heading straight for their bedroom. She could hear Marcus following behind her, his footsteps heavy with anger and frustration.
Gina entered their bedroom and closed the door behind her, leaning against it for support. She could hear Marcus approaching, his voice sharp and accusatory.
"You can't just walk away from this," Marcus began, his tone filled with bitterness. "We need to talk."
Gina turned to face him, her eyes filled with tears. "Talk about what, Marcus? About how your family treats me like I'm nothing? About how you can't even support me in my grief?"
Marcus's expression hardened. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a folded document, tossing it onto the bed. "I've had enough, Gina," he said coldly. "I'm done with this. Done with you."
Gina's heart skipped a beat as she unfolded the document. Her eyes scanned the words—divorce papers. The realization hit her like a punch to the gut.
"I just lost my grandmother," Gina whispered, her voice trembling with sorrow. "And now I'm losing my marriage too? While pregnant?"
Marcus's face remained impassive. "You brought this on yourself, Gina. You disrespected me and my family. You think I can just ignore that?"
Tears streamed down Gina's cheeks. "I loved you, Marcus. I tried so hard to make this work."
Marcus's voice turned cold. "Love isn't enough, Gina. Not when you disrespect everything my family stands for."
He turned to leave, his footsteps echoing in the silence that followed. Gina collapsed onto the bed, clutching the divorce papers to her chest as she sobbed uncontrollably.
Time seemed to blur as Gina lay on the bed, her mind numb with grief and betrayal. Minutes or hours passed before she heard the door creak open again.
Evelyn entered the room, her expression filled with anger. "So, Marcus mentioned something about divorce," she said, her voice dripping with venom.
Gina sat up slowly, her eyes red and swollen from crying. "I just lost my grandmother, I don’t need this," she said hoarsely, her voice barely above a whisper.
Evelyn scoffed dismissively. "Always the victim, aren't you? You think you can just walk away from my son and take everything with you? All his money?"
Gina's heart pounded in her chest. "I don't want anything from Marcus," she replied, her voice stronger now despite the tears that still streamed down her face. "I just want peace."
Evelyn's eyes narrowed dangerously. "Peace? You've caused nothing but chaos since the day you married into this family," she accused, taking a threatening step closer to Gina.
Before Gina could react, Evelyn's hand lashed out, striking Gina across the face with a resounding slap. Gina recoiled, her cheek stinging with pain as she stared at Evelyn in shock.
"You will never take my son's money," Evelyn spat, her voice filled with malice. "You hear me? Never."
Gina's hand trembled as she wiped away tears and felt the sting of the slap. She looked down at the divorce papers still clutched tightly in her hand. In that moment, she made a decision.
In a surge of anger and determination, Gina grabbed a pen from the bedside table and unfolded the divorce papers. With trembling hands, she flipped through the pages until she found the signature line.
Evelyn watched her with a mix of satisfaction and disdain. "That's right, Gina," she taunted. "Sign it. Sign away everything you never deserved."
Gina's hand hovered over the paper for a moment, her heart pounding in her chest. This was it—the end of her marriage, the end of a dream she had once held so dear.
With a shaky breath, Gina pressed the pen to the paper and signed her name. The ink flowed smoothly, marking the finality of her decision.
As she set the pen down, a sense of relief washed over her—a bittersweet release from the pain and turmoil that had consumed her for so long.
Evelyn's voice cut through the silence. "Good riddance," she sneered, turning on her heel and leaving the room without another word.
Alone once more, Gina collapsed onto the bed, clutching the divorce papers to her chest.
Tears of grief and anger mixed as she allowed herself to mourn not only the loss of her marriage but also the shattered dreams and hopes she had once held dear.
With a final sigh, she packed her things and started for her sisters house.
“Goodbye,” Emma said by her car as she entered and started the engine. “Make sure to say hi to your grandmother for me.”
Gina didn’t know what that meant, but she was going to leave and never come back.
She floored the car down the highway, heading for her sister's place until she came around a bend.
Just as she applied the brakes, she noticed they were not working as she drifted down the road, coming face to face with a truck!
