A Glimpse of the Past

Ethan and Maya's hug lingered, a sense of comfort and trust settling between them. "Thanks, Ethan," Maya whispered, her voice trembling. "Just knowing someone cares...means a lot." Ethan smiled softly. "I'm here for you, Maya. Always." As they pulled back, Maya's eyes sparkled with unshed tears. "Hey, let's get out of here," Ethan said, changing the subject. "Want to grab dinner with me?" Maya nodded, a small smile on her lips. At the diner, they talked about everything except Maya's past. Ethan sensed she wasn't ready to open up further. As they finished their meal, Maya's phone buzzed. Her eyes widened in fear. "What's wrong?" Ethan asked, concern etched on his face. Maya hesitated before answering. "It's...my mom. She's been calling me nonstop since I moved here." Ethan's grip on his fork tightened. "Don't answer it. You don't have to deal with her." Maya's voice trembled. "I know...but what if she finds me?" Ethan's heart raced with anger. "I won't let her hurt you, Maya. I promise." Maya's eyes locked onto his, a glimmer of hope there. As they left the diner, Ethan walked Maya home, his arm around her shoulders. At her doorstep, Maya turned to him. "Thanks, Ethan...for being my rock." Ethan smiled, his heart full. "Anytime, Maya. You're not alone." As Maya went inside, Ethan couldn't shake the feeling that Maya's past was far from over...
