Ethan walked Maya to her next class, enjoying their easy conversation. But he couldn't help noticing that she seemed to be avoiding certain topics.
"Hey, Maya, can I ask you something?" Ethan said, as they approached her classroom.
"Sure," Maya replied, her eyes guarded.
"What's with the scars on your wrists?" Ethan asked gently.
Maya's expression turned icy. "It's nothing. Just an accident."
Ethan sensed she was hiding something. "Maya, I'm here for you. If you need someone to talk to..."
Maya's mask slipped, revealing a glimmer of vulnerability. "Thanks, Ethan. But really, it's fine."
Ethan nodded, but his curiosity lingered.
In class, Maya's talent for art impressed everyone, including their teacher, Mrs. Johnson.
"Maya, your sketch is incredible," Mrs. Johnson said. "You have a gift."
Maya blushed, looking pleased.
After class, Ethan waited for Maya outside. "Hey, want to grab a snack with me?" he asked.
Maya agreed, and they headed to the school's café.
As they sipped their drinks, Ethan probed gently. "Maya, I know you're hiding something. I want to help."
Maya's eyes darted around, ensuring they were alone. "Ethan, I...I don't know if I can trust you yet."
Ethan's heart ached. "I promise, Maya. Whatever it is, I'm here for you."
Maya took a deep breath, her voice barely above a whisper. "I used to live with my mom...but she wasn't a good person. I had to escape."
Ethan's eyes widened in shock. "Oh, Maya...I'm so sorry."
Maya's eyes welled up with tears. "I don't want anyone to know. Please, Ethan, keep my secret."
Ethan nodded, his heart heavy with emotion. "I promise, Maya. Your secret is safe with me."
As they hugged, Ethan knew he'd do anything to protect Maya from her painful past...
