ATHENA
It took me a while to recover from the shock.
I lowered my head, unable to meet his intimidating gaze but his fingers caught my chin and forced my face up.
Those silver eyes searched mine so intensely it felt like he could see straight through my soul.
"W-what do you mean?" I finally managed.
His jaw tightened. "You're sleeping with my father now?"
The question came out like an accusation.
"It's not what you—"
"Adrian was right."
His voice turned colder.
"You're just another common whore."
The words hit harder than they should have. I let out a bitter laugh.
"So that was why you left me money?"
For the first time, something flickered across his face. Then it disappeared. "Isn't that what hoes like you want?" His grip on my chin tightened slightly. "The highest bidder?"
What an irony.
I actually did end up with the highest bidder.
Anger surged through me. "You both are jerks."
My voice shook, but I refused to look away.
"And if you think I ever dreamed of being in this position..." I jabbed a finger against his chest. "...then you're an even bigger pathetic jerk than I thought."
His expression darkened. His hand left my chin and slid slowly to my throat. His long fingers wrapped around my neck, warm and firm.
Not enough to choke me. Just enough to remind me that whatever control he had left was hanging by a thread.
But strangely, I wasn't scared anymore.
I was angry. Angry was even an understatement. I was the one who was used in the first place.
The door creaked behind us.
Alex's hand slipped from my throat immediately, but he didn't move away. He simply took one step back, his silver eyes never leaving mine.
I glanced toward the doorway.
Adrian.
He stood there with a dark expression, his gaze moving from Alex... to me... then slowly down the length of my body.
I suddenly became painfully aware of the tiny dress still clinging to my skin.
His jaw flexed. "How long have you been sleeping with Vlad?"
The question hit me so hard I blinked.
"What?"
"You heard me." His voice was colder than usual.
"How long?"
I let out a dry laugh. "Does it matter?"
His expression hardened. "So you're not even going to deny it."
A bitter smile tugged at my lips. "You've already made up your minds."
"Answer the question."
"No."
The single word seemed to irritate him even more.
"So shameless."
I scoffed.
"Shameless?" I repeated. "That's rich coming from two men who slept with a random girl, left money on the bedside table and disappeared before sunrise."
Neither of them spoke. For the first time, Alex looked away. It lasted barely a second.
Then those cold silver eyes returned to me. "You really think Nightshade was a coincidence?"
My brows knitted together. "What do you mean?"
There was eerie silence. The brothers exchanged a brief look and Alex's jaw tightened.
Finally, he spoke. "You'll regret coming into this house, Athena."
Something inside me snapped.
"Well..." I forced a smile that I didn't feel. "You'd better get used to me."
Both of them stared. I should've stopped there.
Instead, my mouth betrayed me.
"Who knows?" I shrugged weakly. "Maybe you should start calling me 'Step mum.'"
The words echoed through the room.
Mother of the moon...
What the hell did I just say?
The smile vanished from Adrian's face. Alex went frighteningly still. Even the air in the room seemed to freeze.
I swallowed.
Okay...
That might have been the dumbest thing I'd ever said. But who cares? They were being so mean and inconsiderate even after humiliating me at Nightshade.
Neither of them said another word.
Alex shot me one last unreadable look before brushing past Adrian and walking out.
Adrian lingered for a second longer.
"You'd better pray Father gets tired of you before we do."
Then he followed his brother, pulling the door shut behind him.
Click.
The room suddenly felt too quiet. I stood there for a few seconds, staring at the closed door before my knees finally gave in.
I sank onto the edge of the bed and buried my face in my hands.
"What is wrong with my mouth?" I groaned.
First, I'd asked King Vladimir if he was threatened by his sons. Now I'd practically volunteered to become their stepmother.
Mother of the moon...
I let out a long sigh and leaned back against the mattress. At this point, I needed to speak to someone before I'd literally go crazy.
Scarlet.
Only Scarlet came to mind.
I shot upright and looked around, then it hit me.
The phone.
The middle-aged lady had given me a phone before I left the auction. Alpha Falcon's phone.
She'd specifically told me never to part ways with it.
"Oh, no..."
My heart dropped.
I'd left my purse in the Maybach.
And the phone was still inside it.
Shit.
Alpha Falcon was going to kill me before King Vladimir ever got the chance.
