Chapter 8

Sarah My eyes shot open, when I felt the weight of an arm, directly on my top half. The room was dark, only a hint of moonlight shone through the partly closed curtains. I turned my head to see Xavier fast asleep. I did not think, I would be asleep this long or that he would tuck me inside the comforter and get in right beside. It was his bed, I felt bad for limiting his space. The clock beside me read: 3:05 a.m. I groaned inwardly, now I was going to be awake the rest of the night. The minutes seemed to go on forever, only in my thoughts. It was like torture. I could not get up or move Xavier’s arm off of my body. So I amused myself with looking at his sleeping face. He looked so peaceful, the smugness, the haunting look gone and all that remained was a cute figure. The little snores coming from his mouth, the shirtless torso. My mouth went dry. I wiggled my arm, out of the cage and stroked the scruff of his beard. He suddenly turned over to the other side thus, ending my fun. But with his shift, his arm went with him, freeing me from captivity. An hour had passed, I was growing impatient with how long the night was. If he hadn’t placed his big block of an arm on me, I would still be asleep. Counting sheep was of no use to me neither was humming tunes in my head. Times like these, I wish I had something to do or think about that would make the time go faster. It just wasn’t meant to be. ——————— I heard someone calling my name, but I kept my eyes shut. Sometime during the night I guess I fell back to sleep. From the deep playful tone, I could recognize it was Xavier. I did not want to get up. He already woke up once. Why must he do once more. It would have been respectful for me to get out of his bed but, it was entirely too soft to remove myself from. So when his hand shook my shoulder, I swatted it away. “Get away from me Xav! I want to sleep some more.” I groan, shoving his hand away once more. “Well my little flower, I hate to break it to you but we have somewhere to be.” He replies, softly. I crack open eyes and stare up at him. He was dressed in a navy blue suit and grey tie. His hair was slicked to perfection. I must look like a monster, covering myself with the blanket. I speak through it, “You look like your going to work, what does that have to do with me?” I inquire. “Your coming with me naturally, if I left you here alone, I can not guarantee you’ll be here when I return. Now it’s time to get up, my meeting is at 9 and it’s already 7:50.” He commands. I watched him as he exited the bedroom, the only thought in my mind was how much I wanted to kick his ass. He was nothing more than a thorn in my side. I rolled out of bed and proceeded to make the bed. I rubbed my eyes as I grabbed the only remaining clean clothes in my bag. It was my cupcake jumper with a pair of pink thigh highs. I should have packed more to wear, but my obsession with having enough underwear outweighed the clothing options. I hurried to brush my teeth, avoiding to look in the mirror for too long. I hated to look in the mirror, it showed my imperfection too clearly. I hurried back into the room and slipped on the clothes I thought I would never have to wear in public. I slipped on my converse sneakers. A complete contrast with the outfit but it was all I had. My other shoes were a pair of boots and it wasn’t cold enough yet for those. I took my glasses out of my bag and slipped them on. Ultimately, I was scared of the reaction Xavier would have to seeing me like this. What if he thought I was weird for dressing like this. It couldn’t be helped, I had to to just face him. I walked down the hallway and into the living room. His back was facing my front, so he couldn’t see me as of yet. I took and deep breath and cleared my throat to get his attention. He turned to face me, lowering his mug from his lips as he looked at me from top to bottom. I busied myself with staring at the floor. I felt embarrassed. Footsteps approached mine and a finger tilted my head up. “So sexy, my flower, you’ve been holding out on me.” He says, huskily. I felt warm all over at his compliment. “Come, we must be going. When we get to the office, make sure you ask Sylvia to get you some breakfast.” I nodded my head, while he grabbed his briefcase. I followed behind him, quickly and quietly. To be honest, I was still tired but more so dazed by the compliment he just gave me. James was outside, holding the door open for us to get in. I cringed at seeing him. Our last encounter was dreadful. I had secretly hoped, I would never have to see him again. ———————— Xavier’s company was indeed the very same building, I was sitting against the day prior. It had to be the largest building in the business district. Inside was just as extravagant. People nodded their heads to Xavier and some even spoke to him, he gave orders and handled the others with utmost authority. This side of him was so different than the man I knew. He, even more, sexier than before. Someone who had their head on straight and could take care of business. His office was very large. I couldn’t help but gawk at the furniture, the people working. It was like a well-oiled machine or even a brain. If one part was broken, the whole thing would collapse. “Wow!” I whispered. I heard a chuckle behind me, I turned my head to see Xavier elbows leaning on his desk as he watched me. “Impressed my little flower?” He asks. I did not want lie, so I simply nodded my head. He chuckled and instructed me to sit down. I planted myself on the black sofa, he was on the phone talking to someone as I tried to memorize every detail of his office. A woman came in minutes later with a plate of food. It was the same woman he was talking to on the street! I guess this was Sylvia. Today she wore a black suit top, with matching skirt. Truthfully, she was stunning. I parked in comparison to her. “Hello dear, my name is Sylvia, Mr. Stone’s personal assistant. If you need anything, don’t be shy in coming to me if Mr. Stone is indisposed of, “ she replies, genuinely. I smile and stand up to shake her hand, “My name is Sarah and thank you very much.” I reply, politely. She speaks to Xavier for a bit and he gets up. “Flower, it is time for my meeting. Eat some of the food and if you want to go out, make sure you tell Sylvia. Understand? He asks. I nod my head, in understanding. He kisses my forehead and leaves. I touch the spot he just kissed. I was surprised he did that. It was so out of the blue. I couldn’t help but smile, it was undeniably sweet nonetheless. I lifted the napkin and gazed at my favorite foods. Waffles smothered in Nutella and some strips of crispy bacon. It was a little weird that they knew my favorites but the aroma of the food quickly shoved the thought away. I started shoveling food into my mouth until nothing remained but the crumbs. I didn’t realize I was that hungry until the food entered my mouth. I got up to find the bathroom. The chair at Sylvia’s desk was empty, I would be right back she would not know I was gone. As I turned the corner, I saw the one person I had never thought I would see again. Tristan. He spotted me and walked quickly to where I stood in shock. What was he of all people doing here? “Hello Sarah, I have no seen you in quite some time. I trust that you have sought me out, so you can return and we can move on with our engagement. I was promised a bride, willing or unwilling is no real issue for me.” He says, nonchalantly. “Listen here bub, I will not consent to be your fiancée, not now, nor ever. I find it repulsive to think my parents dragged you along with their scheme and you just accept it. I do know care if you were the last man on earth or my life was in danger. I would rather die.” I whisper yell. A hand on my shoulder, makes me jump. I turn around and it’s Xavier. Right on time, I bury my body in his large one. I felt safer encased in him then out in the open. “What is going here?” He asks. “Nothing sir, I was just talking to my fiancée,” Tristan replies, hints of sarcasm laced in his time. I interject, “LIAR!” “I never consented to be your fiancée. Go back and tell my ex-parents to put this scheme to bed because I'm not going to falling in line.”
