Sarah
There are four things that are absolutely certain when I walk out the door:
1. Xavier had yelled at me in anger.
2. I lied to him when I said my affection was dwindling. It still remained strong as ever.
3. He mentioned another woman’s name and I hated it.
4. He did not follow me.
I heard a shatter and slew of curses coming from his office. I did not want to turn back and feel the wrath of his anger. Instead, I walked back to Kevin’s office. What he said about Kevin having feelings for me was preposterous. He probably liked those cookie cutter models, blonde hair, fair skin, and a tiny waist. No way he would go for a black girl, with messy curls and childlike behaviors.
His office was empty, looking around I saw people staring at me. Young women looked smug, happy that I was told off. The men, some looked like the women, others simply had a blank expression. It was disheartening but I ignored them… mostly.
I made my way down to the cafeteria. Kevin must have gone down for lunch already. He stood waiting for his food to be prepared, with his head buried in his phone furiously typing. I tapped his shoulder and he turned around. His angry face, melting a little when he saw me.
“Hey! I thought you were busy fighting the beast to come out again.” He says, teasingly.
I sarcastically laughed at his attempt of making the situation a joke. “Look, I’m sorry about what happened?” I say, sincerely. He throws his arms around my shoulders and pulls me close to his side, giving me a hug. “It’s okay, nothing could separate us. We are the duo, Pluto.” He replies, excitedly.
I shake my head, smiling at his joke. This was just what I needed, a silly distraction. A cafeteria employee handed him his food and my mouth watered at the sight. It was a large tray of French fries and some buffalo wings. We sat down and I started picking off his plate before he set his napkin down. “Hey! Get your own food, don’t steal my French fries.” He playfully shouted, holding the plate to his chest.
I pout my lips and blink my eyes rapidly, almost as if I was about to cry. His posture softens and reluctantly he sets the plate down on the table. My face breaks out into a grin, I snatch a handful of fries and shove them into my mouth. Bobbing my head, as the taste of salty goodness intertwines with my taste buds.
I wipe my mouth and begin to ask the question, that had been swirling in my mind since I came down to see Kevin. “Kevin, I have to ask you something?” I say. Wiping his hands of the sauce, he looks directly at me waiting for me to continue. I take a deep breath and blurt out the question.“Kevin, do you like me?”
It felt almost as if my heart was going to spring out of my chest. He looked at me for what felt like hours but must have been only a few minutes. Then he started laughing, a loud boisterous laugh. People turned their heads to look at us and I wanted to just crawl into a hole and die. He wiped a stray tear with the back of his hand and cleared his throat. A smile still plastered on his face.
“Sarah, of course, I like you. If I didn’t then I wouldn’t hang out with you? But you asked the question so odd that I had to laugh. The whole buildup and the look on your face were priceless.” He says, smirking. I shake my head and ask again. “No, I mean do you like me romantically,” I ask again, making my words more forceful.
“No, I do not. You have become one of my closest friends and I would never jeopardize that. You are special to me but in a different way, almost like family. You get what I mean?” He confesses. I sigh and let his words sink in. One, he did not have feelings for me which meant Xavier was wrong. Two, he had said something incredibly heartfelt. Three, I could finally be free of this weighing thought.
“What in the world made you ask such thing in the first place.” He inquires, before taking a bite of out of his chicken. “It is going to sound silly, but Xavier basically said you had feelings for me and he could just tell. Whatever, that means. Isn’t it strange for him to say such a thing.” I ask, by way of answering.
“Yeah… strange.” His voice trails off, as he looks off into the distance. I turn my head to follow his gaze but see nothing but a man emptying the garbage can. He looks back at me and gives me his trademark smile. He was being weird, even more so than normal. I opened my mouth to ask when I heard my name being called. I turn my head and see Xavier, standing there. His eyes appear sad and it looked like he ran his hand through his hair multiple times.
My feelings of anger began to soften, upon seeing him in this state. I stared at him, for a few moments without speaking a word. A sharp kick to my shin snapped me out of my daze. What was I thinking! He not only yelled at me but had the audacity to mention another’s woman name. One whom I suspect was the blonde woman’s name that kissed at the restaurant.
I got up from my seat, marching right up to the tall muscular frame. I raised my hand and smacked him right across the cheek. The crack of my hand against his face could be heard within the walls of the dining hall. I heard a few shocked gasps and utensils being set down.
His eyes grew angry, the warm blue transformed into a cold blue. His jaw ticked but still he did not speak.
“You can be angry all you want Xavier. However, I will not be lied to. Kevin here is my friend and that is it. If you cannot trust me, then you don’t deserve me. And also, I do not know who this Jessica is but since you are so sure I am going to run off with Xavier. Why don’t you get back with her? I’m sure she’ll put up with you- that is your dick.” I lecture, my voice raising as I reach the end. With that, I walk out of the cafeteria, never looking back once.
