Chapter 20

Sarah Beep! Beep! Beep! The recurring sound pulled me out of my slumber. I started to rub my eyes but was stopped by the wires attached to my hand and arm. I looked down at my blanketed body. The room smelled sterile and the door was cracked. I could hear voices and a wide array of footsteps. How did I get here? I moved to sit up and stopped when I felt a sharp pain in my stomach. The previous events flashed back, I was kidnapped by my mother. Xavier had come and saved me. He got shot trying to protect me and I had been stabbed. I lifted the gown to examine my injuries. There were several stitched up cuts. I ran my finger agonist the stiches. It was my fault for getting him… Xavier! What had happened to him? Was it okay? Did I cause his death? I threw my legs over the bed, my knees buckled at the weight making me collapse to the ground. The door opened revealing a nurse, she rushed over to me trying to help me back onto the bed. I pull at her clothes, struggling hoping she will take the hint and let me go. I needed to find answers. I gripped her face, “What happened to Xavier? The man who I was with? Where is he?” I yell. “Ma’am, please calm down. You will burst your stitches if you continue like this.” She reprimands. “I don’t care about me! I want to know what happened to him. Don’t you get, he saved me, he protected me when he could just leave.” I scream. She gives me a sympathetic look and helps me to my feet. I sit on the edge of the bed, my feet dangling from the ground. Leaving the room, she comes back moments later with a wheelchair. “Come on sweetie, the lucky man is in room next door. But I have to warn you, he is in a critical state.” She says, somberly. I sit down on the chair as she wheeled me out of the room and into one next door. As soon as she wheeled me inside, I wish I had not gone. Xavier lay on his back, with a tube in his mouth, a bandage on his forehead. The only sound was the heart monitor and our breathing. He did not look like the Xavier I knew. He looked sick. “What is wrong with him? Why isn’t he awake yet.” I ask, fear to close in around me. “I’m sorry but I’m not in liberty to tell you his medical condition unless you are a family member. It’s protocol.” She states. “We got hurt together, we must have arrived together. It does not matter if I’m not blood-related or married to him. It’s not fair, you should be able to tell what’s going on.” Shaking my head, I throw my hands in the air angry. “I’m sorry but the only thing, I can tell you at this time is that he is in an induced coma. It could take some time before he wakes up again.” She sadly states. “A coma is it possible for him to wake up, possibly today,” I ask, hopeful. “I do not know sweetie, it all depends on him.” She answers. “Please, wheel me in closer.” I plead. She obliges and pushes the wheelchair right beside his bed. I take his hand, giving it a tight squeeze. I felt tear prick my eyes, just looking at him. “Hi Xavier, it’s me your little flower. I wanted to tell you I’m sorry for this happening to you. If you hadn’t met me, this would never have happened. I wish you were right and awake. Your my strong man and I’m your… well, I don’t know a good analogy to finish that statement. I simply want you to be healthy and give those small smiles again. I am fine, I haven’t met with the doctor but if the only takeaway is stitching in my lower back and front. I must be in luck. I have to go now, but I’ll come and visit you soon.” I choke. The nurse wheels me back, I take a peek at her nametag to find her name was Juliet. An ironic name but fitting. She looked like a Juliet. A man stands in my room when we return. The messy mop of hair and the rolled up sleeves means it only can be one person, Kevin. He turns around to face me, eyes full of worry and pity. I grimace, I don’t want pity. I need a distraction. Juliet stops my chair and lets me sit right in front of the chair Kevin sits in. “Sar, you gave me a scare.” He jokes, weakly. I chuckle nonetheless, indulging him in his attempt at humor. He shoots up and wraps his arms around my neck. My initial shock is replaced by the silver of happiness. My friend was here to make me feel better. I had to be strong for Xavier and my sake. I pat his back as whispers his fears in my ear. “I’m okay, Kevin. Please don’t worry about me. The worry should be saved for Xavier. The nurse told me he was in a coma and she doesn’t know when he’ll wake up. What if he doesn’t wake up, Kevin! What if I never get to tell him I’m sorry and I love him ever again.” I break down, my hands over my face. I said I would not cry but here I am crying again. “Sarah, you can’t blame yourself for what happened. I don’t know all the exact details but the people who hurt the both are responsible. You are innocent and you must believe that. I’m sure if Xavier were sitting here, he would say the same thing.” I give him a small smile at his words. Maybe someday I’ll not feel guilty but right now it was eating me up inside. “So how have you been? I haven’t seen you in a minute. Are you okay?” I ask, placing my hand on his. “Everything is fine, I may have snagged me a lucky somebody.” He teasingly brags. “Oh I see, is this somebody cute?” I tease back. “Yes, yes she is.” His eyes twinkle as he says that. I smile, it is good he is here. I wouldn’t have it any other way.
