Chapter 10:Dream of Me

950 Words
Chapter 10 Camille’s class had just ended. She stepped out of the room with her bag hanging loosely on her shoulder, still thinking about the lecture when she stopped mid-step. A familiar figure was leaning against the wall outside. Cameron. Her breath caught slightly. “…Cameron,” she whispered under her breath. Before she could move toward him, Rachel suddenly grabbed Jasmine’s arm. “Uhmm, we’ll keep going,” Rachel said quickly, already pulling her away. “We’ll see you tomorrow!” Jasmine called out, waving with way too much excitement in her voice. Camille didn’t even get a chance to respond. She just stood there for a moment, watching them disappear down the hallway. And then— her eyes went back to him. Cameron was still there. Waiting. Leaning casually against the wall, hands in his pockets, brushed-up hair slightly messy in that intentional way. The kind of look that made people stare without realizing they were staring. Muscular arms. Relaxed posture. Calm expression. Like he had all the time in the world. Camille finally walked toward him. “What are you doing here?” she asked when she reached him. Cameron smiled like he had been expecting her. Then—without saying anything—he took her bag from her shoulder. Camille blinked. “Hey—” But she didn’t stop him. She should’ve. She didn’t. They started walking together toward the exit, and Camille immediately noticed it— people were looking. Whispering. Watching. She tightened her grip on nothing, trying to act normal, but Cameron didn’t seem bothered at all. When they reached the parking lot, his Jeep Wrangler was parked right next to her Benz again. Like it belonged there. Like he belonged there. Cameron opened the car door for her. Then he leaned casually against it, trapping her in a soft kind of space—not forcing her to stay, but making it harder to leave too quickly. Camille looked up at him. Just for a second. Too long to be casual. “I’ll see you tomorrow?” he asked. It wasn’t demanding. It was… hopeful. Camille smiled softly. “See you.” She slipped into her car, and he stepped back just enough to close the door for her. For a moment, he stayed there, leaning against his Jeep. Watching her. Camille turned on her engine slowly. Their eyes met one last time through the window. He gave her a small signal—go ahead. She nodded slightly. Then she drove off. In her rearview mirror, he didn’t move immediately. He just stood there. Watching her car disappear. And Camille didn’t know why that made her chest feel warm. ⸻ Later that night As soon as Camille got home, her phone buzzed. Cameron: Text me when you get home. She stared at it for a second longer than she should have. Then replied: Camille: I’m home. She set her phone down, but it buzzed again almost instantly. Cameron: Good. I was about to start worrying. Camille bit her lip slightly before replying. Camille: You worry fast. Almost immediately— Cameron: Only about things I care about. Her fingers paused over the screen. Heat crept up her neck. She typed: Camille: That sounds dangerous. Three dots appeared. Disappeared. Then reappeared again. Cameron: Only if you make it dangerous. Camille exhaled slowly, leaning back in her chair. She shouldn’t be smiling. But she was. She locked her phone for a second… then unlocked it again. And typed: Camille: What exactly are you trying to do, Cameron? This time, he replied instantly. Cameron: Get to know you better. Her heart jumped slightly. She stared at the message. Then typed: Camille: And if I say no? A pause. Longer this time. Then: Cameron: Then I’ll still see you tomorrow. Camille laughed softly under her breath. Of course he would. She set her phone down and went to her bath. Warm water. Candles. Silence. But even as she closed her eyes, her phone buzzed again from the sink. She reached for it lazily. Cameron: Are you already asleep? Camille smiled. She typed back: Camille: No. Almost immediately: Cameron: Good. Another message followed. Cameron: Because I was going to say I miss teasing you already. Camille stared at the screen. Then, without thinking too much, she replied: Camille: You miss teasing me or me? Three dots appeared right away. This time, there was no hesitation. Cameron: Both. Camille felt her heart skip. She sank a little deeper into the bath, trying to calm herself. Then typed: Camille: You’re very bold for someone I just met. Cameron: You noticed. Camille: I don’t know if that’s a good thing. Cameron: It depends. She raised an eyebrow even though he couldn’t see it. Camille: On what? A pause. Then: Cameron: If you’re going to run away from me… or stay. Camille stared at that message for a long moment. Water rippled slightly as she shifted. Her thumbs hovered over the screen. Then she typed slowly: Camille: What if I don’t know yet? Cameron replied almost instantly. Cameron: Then I’ll wait. A beat. Then another message followed. Cameron: But I won’t stop showing up. Camille swallowed slightly. Her heart was definitely not calm anymore. She typed: Camille: You’re going to be a problem. Cameron: Only for your focus. She covered her face with one hand, laughing quietly. Then typed: Camille: Goodnight, Cameron. A few seconds passed. Then: Cameron: Goodnight, Camille. And then, one last message came in. Cameron: Dream of me a little. Camille stared at it. Her heart racing harder than she wanted to admit. She locked her phone. And whispered to herself in the warm candlelight— “I already am.”
