Each room had been aired, floors given a wax polish and eiderdowns hung out on the washing-line to freshen them up. She'd been to her regular hair appointment the day before, albeit a bit cautiously, but as it turned out, Maureen was her usual cheerful self and readily filled Grace in on the town's gossip. There was no awkwardness between them and nothing was mentioned about the 'incident'. Dick, being afraid of either getting in the way or getting told off, had spent most of his time avoiding going indoors.
