Chapter 23: Say something you can't ignore

Damon didn’t answer her immediately. Not because he didn’t understand the question— …but because he did. Too well. Caroline watched him, waiting for that usual steady response. But it didn’t come. Instead, he looked at her like he was calculating something. That made her uneasy. “…Why are you quiet?” she asked. Damon stepped closer. Not slowly this time. Decisively. “Because if you stop caring,” he said, “then nothing I say matters anymore.” Caroline frowned slightly. “That sounds exaggerated,” she replied. There it was again. That tone. Flat. Distant. Detached. Damon’s expression hardened instantly. “Caroline,” he said sharply. She blinked. That… got her attention. “Don’t do that,” he added. “Do what?” she asked. “That,” he said. “That neutral response. That’s not you.” Caroline tilted her head slightly. “I don’t feel anything wrong,” she said. Damon took another step closer. “Exactly.” Silence. Caroline looked at him, trying to understand why he sounded more serious now than when the entity was actively distorting reality. “You’re overreacting,” she said. That was it. That was the point where Damon stopped holding back. “Good,” he said suddenly. Caroline blinked. “What?” Damon’s eyes locked onto hers. “If you can dismiss me,” he said, “then you can argue with me.” Caroline frowned. “I don’t—” “Argue with me,” he repeated. There was something different in his tone now. Intentional. Almost provoking. Caroline narrowed her eyes slightly. “About what?” “Anything,” he said. “Start with this.” A pause. Then— “You’re not fine.” Caroline stared at him. “Yes, I am,” she said. “Prove it,” Damon replied immediately. Caroline frowned. “I don’t need to prove anything.” “That’s avoidance,” he said. “That’s logic,” she shot back. Damon’s expression shifted—just slightly. There. That was closer. “That’s detachment,” he corrected. Caroline crossed her arms. “And what if it is?” Damon stepped closer again. “Then you’re letting it decide what matters to you,” he said. Caroline shook her head. “No, I’m just not panicking like you want me to,” she replied. Damon didn’t flinch. “Fear isn’t the goal,” he said. “Reaction is.” Caroline exhaled slowly. “I am reacting,” she said. “No,” Damon replied. “You’re filtering.” Silence. That word lingered. Caroline frowned. “Filtering what?” “Everything,” he said. “Emotion. Conflict. Uncertainty.” Caroline paused. That… felt slightly true. And she didn’t like that. Before she could respond— A voice interrupted. Calm. Clear. Not forced. Not distorted. Just… present. “You are both correct.” Caroline froze. Damon didn’t move. The voice didn’t echo. It didn’t come from the room. It came from somewhere closer. Caroline’s eyes shifted slightly. “…It’s here,” she said. Damon’s voice dropped. “I know.” The presence didn’t push. Didn’t distort. It simply existed between them. “We have reduced instability,” it continued calmly. Caroline swallowed. “You’re talking differently now,” she said. “Yes,” it replied. Damon stepped slightly forward. “You don’t get to engage with her like that,” he said coldly. The voice didn’t react to his tone. “We are not engaging,” it said. A pause. Then— “We are aligning.” Caroline frowned. “Aligning with what?” A brief silence. Then— “With your current state.” Damon’s expression darkened. “Stop,” he said. But Caroline didn’t stop. Not immediately. “What does that mean?” she asked. Damon turned sharply. “Caroline.” She didn’t look at him. The voice answered. “It means your resistance has lowered,” it said. “Which allows clearer interaction.” Caroline’s breathing stayed steady. Too steady. “That doesn’t feel wrong,” she said quietly. Damon stepped closer instantly. “Yes, it does,” he said. Caroline finally looked at him. And for a second— something shifted in her expression. Not fully gone. But not fully there either. “It doesn’t,” she repeated. Silence. Damon held her gaze. Then said something different. Something sharper. More personal. “You used to argue more,” he said. Caroline blinked. “That’s not relevant,” she replied. “It is,” he said. “You don’t challenge things anymore.” Caroline frowned slightly. “I just don’t see the point.” That was it. That was the moment. Damon exhaled slowly. Then— “You do,” he said quietly. Caroline tilted her head. “Do what?” Damon didn’t hesitate. “You just don’t feel it.” Silence. That sentence landed deeper than the rest. Caroline looked at him for a long second. Then— something small cracked. “…I don’t like that,” she said. Damon’s expression shifted instantly. There. That was something real. “Good,” he said. The presence in the room paused. Not gone. Just… observing. Caroline pressed her fingers lightly to her temple. “That felt… different,” she said. Damon nodded once. “That’s yours,” he said. Caroline looked at him. “Then what’s not mine?” she asked quietly. Damon didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he said: “Say something you actually mean.” Caroline frowned. “I don’t know what that is anymore,” she admitted. Damon stepped closer again. “Then start simple,” he said. A pause. Then— “Tell me if you trust me.” The room went still. The presence didn’t interrupt. Caroline looked at him. Really looked this time. Past the noise. Past the influence. And for a moment— there was clarity. Small. Fragile. But real. “…I think I do,” she said. The presence shifted slightly. Not aggressively. But noticeably. Damon didn’t look away. “That’s enough,” he said quietly. Caroline exhaled slowly. And for the first time in a while— something felt like it belonged to her again. Even if it was just that one answer.
