CHAPTER 14: What it learns first

900 Words
The silence after the last flicker didn’t feel like peace. It felt like waiting. Caroline stayed where she was, afraid that even shifting her weight might restart whatever had just paused. The room was still wrong—but now it was quietly wrong. Damon didn’t move from his position either. The shadow in the corner remained, but it no longer pressed forward. It watched. That was worse. Caroline whispered, “Why did it stop?” Damon didn’t take his eyes off it. “Because it’s recalculating,” he said. Caroline frowned. “Recalculating what?” Damon finally glanced at her. “You,” he replied. That made her stomach drop slightly. The shadow shifted—slowly. Not aggressively. Almost… curiously. Like it had shifted from attacking to observing. Caroline stepped closer to Damon without thinking. He didn’t comment on it. But he didn’t move away either. “It’s different now,” she said quietly. Damon nodded once. “Yes.” A pause. Then— “It’s learning patterns instead of breaking them.” Caroline shook her head slightly. “That sounds worse.” “It is,” he said simply. The shadow pulsed again. But this time, something subtle changed. The room didn’t distort. Instead— The air settled. Like something was trying to make itself understandable. Caroline frowned. “It feels… calmer.” Damon’s expression tightened slightly. “Don’t trust that,” he said immediately. Caroline looked at him. “Why?” “Because it’s the first stage of influence,” he replied. She swallowed. “Influence of what?” Damon hesitated. Just briefly. Then— “Choice.” The word didn’t make sense at first. Caroline stared at him. “Choice?” Damon nodded toward the shadow. “When it realizes it can’t force reaction,” he said, “it starts suggesting them.” Caroline’s voice dropped. “Suggesting what?” Damon didn’t answer immediately. The shadow flickered slightly. And then— The room changed. Not dramatically. But enough that Caroline noticed instantly. The bed behind her looked slightly closer than before. She stepped back. “No. No, it’s doing it again.” Damon looked sharply at the room. “This is how it starts negotiating,” he said. Caroline frowned. “Negotiating?” Damon finally turned fully toward her. And for the first time in a while, his voice was lower. More serious. “Not everything it does is force,” he said. “Sometimes it offers alternatives to see what you accept.” Caroline shook her head. “Why would I accept anything from it?!” The shadow shifted again. And suddenly— Caroline heard her own voice. Not spoken. Echoed. From somewhere in the room. “Maybe it’s not all bad…” Caroline froze instantly. “I didn’t say that.” Damon reacted immediately. “That’s not you,” he said firmly. Caroline backed away slightly. “Then what is it?!” Damon’s eyes stayed locked on the shadow. “It’s testing agreement pathways,” he said. Caroline frowned. “That still doesn’t—” “It’s trying to find which version of your thoughts you won’t resist,” he interrupted. Silence followed. The room felt heavier again. But not chaotic. Structured. Caroline looked at Damon carefully now. “You’ve seen this before,” she said quietly. It wasn’t a question. Damon didn’t answer immediately. The shadow pulsed softly. Like it was listening for his response too. Then Damon finally said— “Yes.” Caroline’s voice lowered. “With another Anchor?” A pause. This time, his expression changed. Just slightly. And that was enough. “Yes,” he said again. Caroline studied him. “What happened to them?” Damon didn’t respond right away. The silence stretched longer than before. The shadow flickered again, almost impatient. Then Damon said quietly— “They agreed too much.” That made the room feel colder. Caroline whispered, “Agreed to what?” Damon finally looked at her. And this time, his answer was careful. “To what it suggested.” Silence hit again. Caroline took a step back. “And that’s bad?” Damon didn’t soften it. “It changed them,” he said. The shadow pulsed again. Caroline felt a small pressure behind her eyes, like something trying to insert a thought gently instead of forcefully. She shook her head quickly. “Stop it.” Damon stepped closer immediately. “Don’t entertain it at all,” he said firmly. Caroline looked at him. “How do I even know what’s mine anymore?” That question hung in the air longer than anything else. Damon hesitated. Then— “You anchor it,” he said quietly. “Not the other way around.” Caroline swallowed. The shadow shifted again. And for a moment— It didn’t feel like it was outside the room anymore. It felt like it was inside the conversation. Caroline’s voice dropped. “Damon…” He didn’t look away from it. “I know,” he said. A pause. Then— “It’s learning faster now.” The shadow pulsed one more time. And this time— It didn’t imitate her voice. It used Damon’s. Soft. Controlled. Close. “Don’t worry,” it said. Caroline froze instantly. Damon’s expression darkened sharply. And for the first time— He stepped forward like he was about to fight something that didn’t have a body.
