Chapter 5: The mark awakens

711 Words
The darkness didn’t feel empty anymore. It felt occupied. Caroline stood still, her breath shallow, listening to the silence that had replaced the streetlight’s hum. Damon didn’t move. The other man didn’t either. But both of them had changed the moment the light went out. Like they were no longer reacting to her… but to something behind her. “Don’t turn around,” Damon said suddenly. Caroline froze. “Why?” “Just don’t.” But fear doesn’t follow instructions. Slowly, against every warning in her body, she turned her head— Nothing. At first. Just darkness stretching down the street. Then— A faint sound. Like fingernails dragging softly across glass. Caroline stepped back instinctively. “What is that?” The other man moved in front of her again instantly, blocking her view. “Stay behind me,” he ordered. Caroline’s voice shook. “I don’t understand what’s happening.” Damon exhaled sharply like he was deciding something he didn’t want to. Then he stepped closer. “This is where it begins,” he said. Caroline frowned. “What begins?” Damon’s eyes flicked to her wrist. Then her collarbone. Then back to her eyes. “The awakening.” Her stomach dropped. “That’s not an answer.” “It is,” he said. “Just not the kind you like.” The sound in the dark grew louder. Closer. The air itself felt heavier now, like it was pressing down on her lungs. And then— Caroline felt it. A sudden heat under her skin. She gasped and grabbed her wrist. “What is that—” A faint glow. Barely visible. Like ink under skin reacting to fire. The other man stiffened immediately. Damon’s expression changed completely. “…Too fast,” he muttered. Caroline’s heart pounded. “What’s happening to me?!” The glow spread slightly up her arm, then faded again like it was never there. But the feeling remained. Like something had noticed her back. The sound in the dark stopped. Everything went silent. Damon’s voice dropped lower. “They know.” Caroline shook her head violently. “Stop saying ‘they’ like I understand this!” The other man finally turned slightly toward Damon. “We can’t stay here,” he said. Damon nodded once. But his eyes stayed on Caroline. Like he was calculating something dangerous. Then he said it. “She needs to see it fully.” The other man’s expression sharpened. “Damon—no.” Caroline stepped back. “See what? What are you talking about?!” Damon ignored her question. Instead, he took one step closer. Then another. Caroline didn’t move this time. Not because she wasn’t afraid… but because something inside her refused to. Like part of her wanted to hear the answer. Damon stopped right in front of her. Close enough that she could see the faint shadow under his eyes. Not exhaustion. Something older. He lowered his voice. “What you felt just now,” he said, “is the beginning of recognition.” Caroline swallowed. “Recognition of what?” Damon’s gaze sharpened. “Of what you belong to.” Silence snapped like a wire. Caroline’s voice cracked slightly. “I don’t belong to anything.” Damon didn’t deny it. He just looked at her longer. Then— “You will,” he said quietly. A gust of wind exploded through the street suddenly. Hard. Violent. The darkness around them shifted. Not like wind moving through space… but like something inside it turned its head. The other man grabbed Caroline again. “Now,” he said urgently, “we leave. Now.” But Damon didn’t move. Instead, he looked into the dark. And for the first time— Caroline saw fear in him. Real fear. “They’re not waiting anymore,” Damon said softly. Caroline’s pulse spiked. “What does that mean?” Damon finally looked at her. And what he said next made her blood run cold. “It means you’re no longer hidden.” A pause. Then— “It means you’re being hunted.” The darkness behind them rippled. And something stepped closer. Not fully visible. But undeniably real. Damon exhaled once. Then said the words that changed everything. “Caroline… run.”
