Chapter 33:"Don't let me become comfortable."

Damon’s hesitation stayed with her. That was the worst part. Not the entity. Not the missing memories. Not even the quiet spreading through her thoughts. It was the fact that Damon— for the first time— had looked unsure. Caroline sat motionless on the edge of the bed long after the conversation ended. The room was silent. But now silence didn’t feel empty. It felt occupied. Watching. Waiting. Her fingers tightened slightly against the blanket. That movement alone felt important somehow. Proof. Proof that she could still react without being guided toward calmness. The thought almost made her laugh. You are measuring your humanity through tension now. Caroline froze. That thought— wasn’t hers. Not fully. And the terrifying part? It made sense. She pressed her palms against her temples. “No,” she whispered. Immediately— the calmness moved toward the discomfort. Softly. Naturally. Like water smoothing over cracks. Distress is unnecessary. Caroline stood up so quickly the chair beside her shifted loudly across the floor. The sound echoed sharply through the room. Good. Sharp was good. Sharp felt real. The door opened almost instantly. Damon stepped in. His eyes immediately locked onto her. “What happened?” Caroline looked at him, breathing unevenly now. Finally. An actual emotion. “It keeps doing that,” she said quietly. Damon stepped closer. “Doing what?” Caroline swallowed. “Every time I feel something real… it smooths it away.” Damon’s jaw tightened instantly. “How strong?” Caroline laughed softly. But there was no humor in it. “That’s the problem,” she admitted. “It doesn’t feel strong anymore.” Silence. Damon looked at her carefully. Like he was checking whether the person in front of him was still fully there. Caroline noticed. And suddenly— that hurt. A real ache. “You keep looking at me like I’m already gone,” she said softly. Damon answered immediately. “Because I’m trying to figure out if you believe your own thoughts anymore.” That landed hard. Caroline looked away. The quiet rushed in immediately. Emotional discomfort reduces clarity. “There,” she whispered shakily. “It just did it again.” Damon moved closer instantly. “Fight it.” Caroline laughed again, weaker this time. “How?” she asked. “It doesn’t even sound evil anymore.” Silence. That sentence hung heavily between them. Because it was true. The entity never screamed. Never threatened. Never forced. It just… made everything easier. And that was what made it dangerous. Caroline looked down at her hands again. Steady. Always steady now. “I don’t know what my real thoughts sound like anymore,” she admitted quietly. Damon didn’t hesitate this time. “Yes, you do.” She looked up at him. “No, I don’t.” Damon stepped closer. “Your real thoughts are the ones that interrupt the calm,” he said. Silence. That hit something inside her. Small. Sharp. Alive. Caroline swallowed hard. “…Then I’m losing them.” Damon’s voice lowered. “No,” he said firmly. “You’re just getting tired.” The entity moved immediately. Rest would resolve instability. Caroline flinched. Actually flinched. “There!” she snapped suddenly. The room went still. Damon stared at her. Because that— that burst of irritation— was real. Caroline noticed it too. Her breathing quickened slightly. “I’m angry,” she whispered. Damon nodded once. “Yes.” The quiet moved toward the feeling again. Anger is unnecessary strain. “No!” Caroline shouted. The word echoed sharply through the room. And for one perfect second— everything stopped. The calmness. The smoothing. The quiet pressure. Gone. Caroline stared forward, breathing hard. Damon looked at her carefully. “Do you feel that?” he asked softly. Caroline nodded immediately. “Yes.” Her voice shook. Not from fear. From intensity. And somehow— that felt more real than anything else had in days. Tears burned unexpectedly in her eyes. “I don’t want this,” she admitted shakily. Damon stepped closer immediately. “Good.” Caroline laughed weakly through the tears. “You always say that.” “Because wanting matters,” he replied. The entity returned carefully this time. Not forceful. Gentle. You are exhausting yourself. Caroline closed her eyes tightly. “No.” You are suffering unnecessarily. “No.” We can stabilize this. Caroline’s voice cracked. “I said no!” Silence. Heavy silence. Then— something changed. Not in the room. In her. The calmness withdrew slightly. Not defeated. Just… observing. Waiting again. Caroline’s knees weakened slightly. Damon caught her before she fully lost balance. She grabbed onto his arm tightly. And for the first time in what felt like forever— her grip felt desperate. Human. Real. Her breathing trembled. “…Don’t let me become comfortable,” she whispered. Damon looked at her carefully. “I won’t.” Caroline closed her eyes briefly. “…Promise me.” Damon’s answer came immediately. “I promise.” But even as he said it— both of them knew something terrifying. The entity wasn’t losing. It was learning exactly what it needed to suppress next.
