(Malory)   It’s late –it’s dark and cold and late. My house is in complete darkness when I get home from work. I didn’t expect to stay so late but the diner was especially busy tonight.   I unlock the door. I step inside. I switch on the light. I drop my bags. I take off my scarf. I drag my way into the kitchen to get a drink of water.   I just want to sleep.   I head straight to my room. I flop onto my bed –I didn’t even attempt to put the light on.   I lie there in silence and close my eyes for about three minutes.   I feel myself drifting… drifting… drifting… when- -THUD!   My eyes open suddenly.   I jump off my bed in a hassle and come to a stand.   The thudding doesn’t stop –it’s coming from downstairs.   Someone’s in my house?   I pace the floors searching blindly in
