It was Halloween, her favorite holiday. She always had a little dark streak that made her enjoy horror movies and creepy stuff. It made sense that this was her best day of the year. Some of her friends jokingly mocked her when she started talking about her spooky season in early June. But she loved it, so he saw no reason should he stop her from doing what made her happy.
Isaac watched from the doorway as Helena leaned towards the bathroom mirror, putting on the last of her costume make-up. Tonight she was rocking dark crimson lipstick. Her eyes were heavily traced with black eyeliner and adorned with big fluffy false lashes.
She was a witch this year and a damn sexy one. Not like the skimpy, overly-revealing witch costumes you sometimes see. No, she was classy as hell. This is the kind of witch that toes the line between erotic and terrifying. He loved the look. Though he did wonder if his yearly cowboy costume was going to clash a bit.
Her costume dress was all black, floor length, with long flowing black gossamer sleeves. It was slightly akin to what Morticia Addams was always portrayed wearing. Tight enough to show off her curvy hips, with a low cut V showing off her breasts, but long enough to still portray elegance.
Her long black hair was straightened and shone beautifully in the bathroom lights. Her skin glowed and perfectly contrasted the lipstick. Her Puerto Rican heritage meant that her caramel-colored skin usually glowed in any light. God, she was beautiful.
He stared at her until she finished getting ready, sliding black spiderweb-shaped earrings onto her ears. The final touch to a perfect costume. She was absolutely perfect. He couldn't stop watching her. It was her favorite time of year and she was in the most beautiful costume she had ever chosen. He was awe-struck.
He wondered briefly what he had done to deserve her. He asked himself that question often, since they met in college and she confounded him by agreeing to be his girlfriend. Then, even more amazingly, by agreeing to be his wife a year later. But more than that, she had been his friend for the past 5 years. The best friend and companion he had ever had. This was the person he would grow old with, start a family with and die with. They say there’s someone out there for everyone, and damn, whoever "they" are might be right. She was everything to him.
She turned, looking backwards and saw him watching her. “You better shut that mouth or you’ll catch spiders.” She joked, lips curving in to a smile. He did just that, realizing he had been gaping at his wife. Suddenly feeling like a peeping Tom, he flushed and straightened, stumbling for words. “You just. I… You look so beautiful.” This time Helena flushed.
“Thank you.” She smiled, looking down at her dress. “I put a lot of work into this costume and I think it turned out perfect.” Her smile blossomed into a full grin. “I better win that contest tonight, or I'll curse every single judge with my new witch powers.” Her white teeth shone in the bathroom lights. He walked behind her, looking at her reflection in the bathroom mirror and wrapped her in a hug. He leaned towards her and planted a kiss on her neck. “You look beautiful, not the costume. You could be wearing anything. Or nothing for that matter.” She turned around to meet his gaze, brown eyes staring into his green. Staring into his very soul. "Maybe we can get a headstart on trying?" He said with a sly smile, one eyebrow c****d in question.
They had a talk just last week. Well, THE talk. The one about kids. She had approached him nervously, saying she felt ready to start a family. His heart soared when she had uttered those words and his eyes filled with tears. He told her yes. Of course, he felt ready too. He hadn't brought it up yet because he didn't want to pressure her. They had both received enough pressure from each of their parents over the past few years, all but demanding grandchildren. With both of them having finished their degrees and starting great jobs last year, it felt like stability was in their grasp. He was confident they could figure the rest out in 9 months before the little bundle arrived.
They had talked about both wanting kids someday, so it was not a surprise later in the marriage. But they never talked about timing. Isaac felt like they would just know when the time was right, and this felt exactly how he imagined it would. "We need to talk about a house, or at least a bigger apartment." His face lit up and they started talking about all the plans he had been thinking of since they married 3 years ago. "Oh and I bet my dad would make us a crib! He's been taking those woodworking classes on weekends." She reached for his hands and squeezed them, grinning from ear to ear. They had stayed up until 3am that night. Planning and daydreaming, making lists and creating a Pinterest board for nursery decor.
Now, barely a week later, he was ready to start trying if she was. She frowned slightly, pursing her lips. "I just finished my makeup!" He laughed lightly and pulled her towards him. "We have time for you to redo it, I'll be gentle." She pulled his face towards hers and kissed him deeply, smearing crimson on his face. She pulled back and said in a whisper, "Don't be."
Who was he to disobey a powerful witch on Halloween?
