Chapter 2: The relationship is toxic

1047 Words
The next morning The family was gathered in the dining room, having breakfast together. Sunlight streamed through the lace curtains, catching in the steam rising from the teapot. The clatter of cutlery and the soft murmur of conversation filled the room, punctuated now and then by a child’s laugh or the rustle of a newspaper. The table was set with toast, eggs, and bowls of fruit, the smell of fresh coffee mingling with the faint scent of butter and jam. Then, the atmosphere changed when the questions were asked. “Who is Princess still? Is it another one of your friends?” Mrs Okafor said. “What?” Marshal responded. “We told you to leave that relationship, and you lied to us,” his father said. “I did,” Marshal responded. “You see, he is still lying to us right in our face. The girl has done something to him. He wasn't like this before,” Mrs Okafor said. “Don't say that nobody can do anything to my child,” Mr Okafor replied. “Mum, Dad, I'm not with her anymore,” Marshal said, trying to cover up. “Oh, will you stop? We saw your chat with her last night,” his mum replied. “What? Are you guys going through my phone now? Unbelievable!” Marshal yelled. “Maybe you gave us no choice,” Mrs Okafor said. “Ahhhhhh,” Marshal yelled. “Please you guys should not fight,” Owen whispered, looking afraid. “We'll your brother is being unreasonable,” his mum replied. “I'm out of here,” Marshal said, walking away. “And where did you think you're going?” his father said. “Anywhere but here, Dad,” Marshal responded. After the argument with his family over breakfast, Marshal felt frustrated and needed some space. He grabbed his jacket and stepped out into the bright morning light, deciding to visit his friend Malcolm, who lived just a few blocks away. As he walked, Marshal replayed the breakfast conversation in his head, feeling a mix of emotions. He wasn't sure why the discussion had escalated so quickly, but he knew he needed to talk it through with someone who wouldn't judge him. When he arrived at Malcolm's place, his friend greeted him warmly and asked what was wrong. Marshal took a deep breath and recounted the entire breakfast debacle, from the heated debates to the slammed plates. Malcolm listened attentively, nodding along and making supportive noises. After Marshal finished venting, Malcolm offered some words of wisdom. "Family can be tough, but they're still your family. Maybe take some time to cool off and talk to them later when emotions aren't running high?" Marshal nodded, feeling a weight lift off his shoulders. Sometimes, all he needed was someone to listen and offer perspective. “I know you love that girl, but your parents won't accept her, so... try to code your relationship more, and be on their good side so... you can go for this opportunity,” Malcolm said. “I get thanks, man,” Marshal responded. “Anytime men,” he responded. As Marshal walked back home, he reflected on his conversation with Malcolm. He realized that his parents' concerns about his relationship with Princess came from a place of love and worry. He decided to approach the conversation with an open mind and a willingness to listen. When he arrived home, he found his parents in the living room, looking a bit tense. Marshal took a deep breath and initiated the conversation. "Hey, Mom and Dad, I'm sorry about earlier. I know we didn't see eye to eye, but I want to talk about Princess." His parents exchanged a cautious glance, but Marshal's sincerity seemed to ease their tension. "We just want what's best for you, son," his mom said gently. "We're worried about the way Princess treats you and how it's affecting your well-being." Marshal nodded understandingly. "I get it. I've been thinking a lot about it, too. Can we discuss what's specifically bothering you? Maybe there's a way to address your concerns." The conversation that followed was more constructive, with Marshal's parents sharing specific incidents and behaviours that had raised red flags, and Marshal sharing his perspective on the relationship. By listening to each other and finding common ground, they began to bridge their differences. With a renewed sense of understanding, Marshal felt hopeful that they could work together to find a solution that would prioritize his happiness and well-being. Marshal sat on his bed, phone in hand, and dialled Princess's number. She answered on the second ring, her voice husky and familiar. "Hey, babe," she said, "what's up?" Marshal took a deep breath, unsure how to broach the topic of his upcoming trip to India. "Hey, Princess. We need to talk." "About what again?" she asked, her tone slightly guarded. Marshal hesitated, choosing his words carefully. "Still, the same matter, we can't keep avoiding talking about it. Parents just told me about this opportunity in India... I'm going to be studying marine engineering and training to be a cadet." There was a pause on the other end of the line. "India? For how long?" "About a semester, maybe longer," Marshal replied, bracing himself for her reaction. The conversation that followed was tense, with Princess expressing her concerns and doubts about the distance and their relationship. Marshal listened attentively, feeling a mix of emotions as he navigated this pivotal moment. Before hanging up, Marshal promised Princess that they'd spend some quality time together before his departure. "Let's plan a special date, just the two of us, to ease the tension and make some memories before I leave," he suggested. Princess's tone softened slightly, and she agreed. "Okay, that sounds nice. When were you thinking?" Marshal thought for a moment. "How about tomorrow night? We could try that new restaurant downtown." Princess agreed, and they made plans to meet at 7 PM the next evening. As Marshal hung up the phone, he felt a sense of relief wash over him. Maybe this date would help them reconnect and find a way to navigate the challenges of his upcoming departure. “Maybe today wasn’t as bad at the end,” Marshal whispered in his thoughts.
