Chapter 5. The Bestfriend

“It’s fine. Just do your thing. I’m moving my stuff up.” Phyliane replied back. “Do you need any help?” “I can move it myself. I only have one suitcase.” Phyliane replied. She did not want to get in the way of his work. Calyx had quit the messaging. There was nothing to talk about since they hardly knew each other. He had no time to give her the time of the day. His only hope was for a docile wife who would not trouble him over the pettiest thing. Placing his phone back on the table, Calyx lifted his head and noticed that all eyes were on him. “Back to the meeting.” Calyx said with his game face on. Iversen, who is within the same age range as Calyx, ranked second among all the cousins, sitting next to him drew close and whispered, “Cal, I overheard your conversation with Gran, did you really marry that girl?” Calyx shot him a glare. Scratching his nose, Iversen straightened his back and ended the probing. Even so, Iversen had nothing but sympathy for Calyx. There was no need for the Johnson boys to secure social and financial standing through marriage, but Calyx and his new bride were not a match in every single way. Poor Calyx. He merely married the girl because Gran likes her. Thank goodness he is not the oldest in the family. Otherwise, he would have to step up to the plate and marry Granny’s chosen girl. On the other hand, Phyliane got the location details and was busy dragging her suitcase to get to her new home. She opened the door only to step into an empty house. The place was bigger than her sister’s house. She started looking around the place. This is her home now. It has two living areas, four bedrooms, one kitchen, two bathrooms and two balconies. Each space was wide. The place was barely furnished. Two out of the two bedrooms have a bed and a wardrobe while the two others are empty. The master’s bedroom has complete facilities. This must be Calyx’s room. Complete with a walk-in closet, study and a bathroom. Phyliane brought her things to the other room with a bed. They can both enjoy their personal space. Although they’re married, Phyliane would not want to live their life as a married couple unless Calyx asked for it. After fixing her suitcase to the bedroom, she went to the kitchen to check. The place was clean without any kitchenware. Both balconies are also bare. She planned to put some plants and a swing for her reading time. Now that she is an occupant, home-cook meals are a must. It seems Calyx was rarely home to eat. Phyliane started with the purchasing online. As for the plants for the furniture and plants for the balcony, she would check on Calyx for his consent. After placing an order online, she grabbed her keys and phone and rushed downstairs to get back to the shop. “What were you up to this morning, Seren?” her best friend, Julienne . “I moved out from my sister’s place. I have been hearing them quarrel with my stay and about going halves of their expenses. So I moved out this morning.” “Tsk! Men always make promises that are bound to be broken. You’re brother in-law-is really something else.” Julienne sighed to show her disappointment. “It’s so unfair. Men, after marriage, forget what promises they made during their courtship or their wedding, saying they would take care of them, blah, blah, blah. But when it comes down to it, they’re nagging and find faults. Women have to put family above all, grinning through misunderstandings.” “Wait a minute,” Julienne suddenly realised something after speaking. “I can’t believe Samone let you move out that easily, what did you do?” Phyliane simply answered, “I got married.” “You what?!” How is it possible? You don’t even have a boyfriend of your own. Who did you marry?” with a high pitched tone, Julienne was shocked as she stared at Phyliane wide eyed for answers. Phyliane came out clean with Julienne, knowing that she cannot keep it a secret. Julienne glared at her for a while before poking her forehead. “ I don’t know where you find the strength to marry someone you don’t even know. You could have just let me know, so you can stay with me until we find a place for you to stay. I have extra rooms at my place.” “Keep it between us and don’t let Samone know. I don’t want her to feel sad about this…”
