CHAPTER 6

S urya was reminded of that incident and looked up with nostalgia, pain of loss and confusion. His friend Vishnu who observed him all the time fathomed his situation and took a seat beside him and started making some small talk to comfort him. “Where were you when I called you the last time?” Surya was startled by the voice which pulled him out of his trance. He hesitantly told “I was busy… with some work… Actually my relative had an accident” “Accident! Why do you lie even to me? I am your friend and I know everything about you. I know you were with Shravani!” “How do you know that? Okay. Don’t tell that to anyone” “I won’t. But who will stop her from gossiping?” “What? What happened?” “Yesterday our seniors and Shravani approached the HOD and complained that you were not regular to your duties and misbehaving with your interns.” Sometimes fear is a better motivation to cope with uncertainty and confusion instead of being swallowed by the past. Surya became alert all of sudden “What? Misbehave? I was doing all… with consent” “But why do you have to do all this? You may end up in trouble” “I don’t know. These things help me avoid thinking about her” “Come on Surya! You have to move on! How long will you live in her memories? You have to find another way to channelize your angst. Focus on your career!” “It is not that simple dude! Especially amidst these psychos as seniors. Working with them kills my passion too.” Surya told peevishly looking at the entrance door partly expecting them to be there at any moment. “Come on! You have to adjust. I know it’s hard but what choice do we have?” Surya chuckled. “What happened? Is this a joke?” Vishnu said irately. “No! I was just reminded of a Fishy dream in which you were a fish and exactly reciting the same words” Vishnu softened and laughed with him. “Oh My God! Is that our new intern?” Surya raised his eyes as a beautiful girl walked past them to the office of the unit chief. Vishnu looked at the intern and was tempted too but regained his disposition “Control Surya! Stop thinking in that way.” “Only way to do that, is to escape from the ward for sometime” and slowly made an attempt to snuck out of the ward. Taniya, a short and heavy woman caught him red-handed while escaping and asked abruptly “Tell me about the patients” Surya complied and told the details of each patient in brief. Later, Soniya entered the room looked Surya in a side glance and took seat on a chair leaning on the table in front being exhausted with a recently operated case. The most peculiar thing about them was that they were twins. Taniya and Soniya were born to a Hindu couple. Taniya fell in love with a Muslim guy. When she was in the final year of MBBS, she eloped with her boyfriend. Her father left no stone unturned to look for her. When he finally found her, he was devastated. She was in a live-in relationship with a Muslim guy. Her father dragged her home and began his search look for a suitable groom. He was ready to go to any extent to get Taniya married off to another boy. He had assembled a complete blackmail kit. It contained a bottle of poison, a rope and a sharp blade! But Taniya was quite clever. When her father was about to blackmail her, she told him that she was already a4 months pregnant. She managed to pass off a flabby abdomen as a baby bump. Somehow Taniya’s plans were successful and she got married to her boyfriend. She changed her name to Taniya Begum after marriage. You may be wondering how they got a seat in same college and are pursuing the same course. Both the sisters were quite studious. Taniya had opted for DGO while Soniya had opted for M.S. Ophthalmology the previous year. They left the course midway and paid a hefty penalty of 5 lakhs each to the university. They studied for a few months and cracked the next session of the NEET exam. They choose surgery in the same college so that they could stay together all the time. Those two seats could certainly have been allotted to more deserving candidates. Taniya saw a patient coming from Casualty. It was diabetic foot. It was gangrenous and had to be amputated. Gangrene is a condition when blood supply to a part of the body is compromised and certain bacteria start decomposing the tissue. The site becomes a cesspool of bacteria and liquefied tissue that can be fatal. She looked towards Surya and Vishnu who were having a conversation. She called Surya intently, who came towards her and asked indignantly "what do you want?" "Get this case shifted to the septic OT. Open the bandages and send me a picture of the wound" And what are you going to do meanwhile? Surya mused. "I will have food in the meantime" she replied as if she heard his mind. You are always ready for food! Surya followed her orders and shifted the patient to the OT. The room was already occupied. Another patient was being operated upon. This annoyed Surya a lot. There was another operating table. But septic and infectious patients were not allowed in there. Seeing no other option left, he simply undid the bandages while the patient was lying on the trolley. He decided to check back later and went to the mess for dinner. Biryani, chicken kebabs, tandoori chicken, chicken 65, Gongura mutton, Chilly chicken, and Chilli were on the menu. Wondering how such delicious food items are being served in the mess? The juniors have to contribute money and order these from restaurants every night duty, which was usually once a week! Surya was so tempted to eat the food as it was 10 pm already and he hadn’t had anything to eat since breakfast. His seniors were enjoying the delicacies for which he’d paid and all he got was a smelly and rotten diabetic leg piece! Surya wondered what the patient’s family was doing all this while as the foot rotted away. As he walked into the mess, he was looked in contempt by his diabolical seniors Taniya, Soniya and Wazir. He was about to get a plate for himself. "Why were you so eager to eat food? Focus on the case first and think about the food later" Wazir scold crabbily munching on a chicken leg. Surya said "I shifted the case but the operating room was occupied so I came for dinner". “Stand up! I had asked you to shift the patient and share the photos of the wound through What’s App. Can’t you even take a bloody picture with your phone?” Wazir bellowed at Surya as the residents and interns from other departments watched the spectacle. “I already shared the pictures. What am I supposed to do if my mobile has no signal inside the hospital?” “Okay! Network problem. But still you have to stay with the patient. That’s it!” What's wrong with this son of a b***h?
