My Wolf Refuses to Let Her Go

1453 Words
Kaelith “She is alive.” My wolf’s voice tore through my head the moment I entered my chambers. I slammed the door behind me. “Be quiet.” Find her. I walked toward the table. “She’s guilty.” MATE. I grabbed the glass on the table and threw it against the wall and it shattered. “She poisoned Seraphyne.” Liar. “She used dark magic.” Liar. “The necklace was found with her.” My wolf growled. You know the truth. I froze and my breathing became heavy. I then looked at the bed, the bed where Elaria slept last night, her face appeared in my mind, her eyes and her trembling lips. The way she looked at me when I touched her, for three years, I never let myself want her. She was my father’s punishment. My duty, a debt, that was what I told myself. But last night, the moment I touched her, everything inside me changed. I remembered her looking at me. “Kaelith…” The way she said my name still burned inside me and I remembered pulling her closer, I remembered kissing her, I remembered how she held onto me as if she had been waiting for that moment all her life. And she was. I closed my eyes and my wolf pushed against my mind. Our mate. “No.” Our mate. I turned away, I could not accept it, I could not. The reason I asked for the divorce kept playing in my mind. Seraphyne came to me days ago, she told me Elaria was dangerous, she said Elaria had been using dark magic. She told me the council would never accept an omega as my Luna. She cried in front of me, she begged me to protect the pack and I believed her, I believed everything. “But why? Why does my wolf refuse to believe Elaria is guilty? Why did the mate bond appear tonight? Why did it burn the moment I rejected her?” I pressed my fingers against my chest and pain shot through me. My wolf howled. You killed our mate. “I didn’t kill her.” You rejected her. I shut my eyes and a knock came at the door. “Alpha?” I didn’t answer and the door opened. My Beta, Rhydian, entered and he stopped when he saw the broken glass. “Alpha?” “What?” His face was serious. “We received word from the border.” My stomach tightened. “What word?” “Elaria.” Everything inside me stopped. “Where is she?” Rhydian hesitates. “She ran into the Rogue Lands.” I moved toward him. “Send the warriors.” “We already did.” “Then send more.” “Alpha…” “Now.” He lowered his head. “Yes.” He turned. “Rhydian.” He stopped. “Bring her back alive.” His eyes met mine. “Alive?” I stared at him. “Did I make myself unclear?” “No, Alpha.” He left and I stood there. For the first time since the ceremony, I allowed myself to breathe. My wolf was silent and then I heard it. Find her. Hours passed and I remained awake, every sound made me turn toward the door, every minute felt like punishment and then someone banged on the door and I opened it. A messenger fell to his knees. “My Alpha…” His voice shook. “What happened?” He looked up. “They found blood.” My heart dropped. “Whose blood?” He swallowed. “Elaria’s.” The room spinned. “Where is she?” “They found the blood near the Rogue Lands.” “And her?” The messenger lowered his head. “No body.” My wolf exploded inside me. LIAR! I grabbed the man’s collar. “You said no body.” “Yes, Alpha.” “Then she isn’t dead.” The messenger trembles. “The rogues said she was attacked.” My grip tightened. “Who told you she died?” “They said no woman could survive that attack.” I released him. “She survived.” Rhydian stepped forward. “Alpha, we should prepare for the possibility that…” “Don’t.” He stopped and I looked at him. “She is alive.” “Alpha…” “I can feel her.” My wolf was screaming, not from pain but from certainty. The bond was weak, almost buried but it was there. A tiny pull inside my chest. Elaria. Alive. I whispered her name. “Elaria.” My wolf answered. Mate. I then turned toward the warriors. “Search every part of the Rogue Lands.” Rhydian hesitated. “The rogues are dangerous.” “I don’t care.” “We could lose men.” “Then lose them.” He looked shocked and I stepped closer. “Bring my mate back.” Rhydian’s eyes widened. “Your mate?” I said nothing and the truth tasted bitter. I rejected my own mate, I allowed her to be humiliated, I watched her cry. I sent her into the Rogue Lands and now another man may have found her. My hands curled into fists. “Find her.” Rhydian nodded. “Yes, Alpha.” I turned away and then my eyes flashed gold. My wolf pushed forward. She belongs to us. I breathed heavily and for one moment, I lost control. My claws tore through my skin. “Enough.” Bring her home. “I will.” Protect her. “I will.” Kill anyone who hurts her. I stared at the door. “Yes.” My voice was no longer mine. “I will.” The warriors left and I walked toward the window. The moon hung above the territory, I remembered Elaria looking back at me before the gates closed. She was waiting for me to stop them but I didn’t. Her eyes begged me but then I turned away and my chest burned. “I am sorry.” The words left my mouth, but she was not here to hear them. A shout came from outside. “Alpha!” I turned. Another messenger rushed inside and he fell to one knee. “My Alpha, there is another report.” “What now?” “A mysterious Lycan was seen near the Rogue Lands.” My eyes narrowed. “Who?” The messenger looked terrified and he lowered his head. “We don’t know for certain.” “Then why are you here?” “Because the description matches only one person.” Rhydian stepped forward. “Who?” The messenger whispered, “The Lycan Emperor.” There was silence and my blood seemed to stop moving. Draveth Auren. The ruler every Alpha feared, the most powerful Lycan alive. The man whose army could crush Bloodmoon before sunrise. I looked toward the Rogue Lands and my wolf growled. He has her. “No.” I clenched my fists. He found our mate. I refused to accept it but the bond pulled again and it was stronger this time. She is alive. And she is somewhere beyond my territory. With him. Rhydian looked at me. “Alpha, if the Emperor has found her, we should think carefully before making a move.” I turned toward him. “Why?” “Because taking her from him may be seen as an act of war.” My eyes narrowed. “I don’t care.” “Alpha…” “I rejected her.” My voice broke for the first time. “I rejected my own mate.” Nobody spoke and I looked at the moon. “But I will not lose her.” My wolf growled inside me. Bring her home. I picked up my sword. “Prepare the army.” Rhydian stared at me. “You want to fight the Lycan Emperor?” I walked toward the door. “If he has my mate, then I will go to him.” I stopped. “And if he refuses to return her…” My eyes turned gold. “Then I will take her back myself.” The doors opened and the warriors waited outside. I stepped into the night. For three years, I believed Elaria was a burden but tonight, I finally understoodthe truth. She was never my punishment, she was my mate and I threw her away. Now someone else has found her. The Lycan Emperor. And if Draveth was keeping Elaria from me, then getting my mate back may mean starting a war against the most powerful ruler in the supernatural world.
