CHAPTER 46 - SERUM

GABRIEL



Lucas looked at Maria and nodded… I could feel the tension in the air. I wasn’t sure if Maria meant it or not… I kind of explained a bit to the twins, but the rest of the story wasn’t mine to tell.

   -What do you know about this situation?

Maria asked them, the twins looked at each other.

   -Gabriel told us that the medicine Eva took suppressed her wolf…

   -What else do you know?

Now David spoke.

   -We use the lotion to mask our scent.

   -Yes, all of that is true but… There's something more. The main ingredients in all of that are catnip and wolfsbane…

   -Wait? Catnip like the field we found the last time?

   -Yes Daniel, I transform the plants and extract the fluids or use them for infusions… depending on the concentration I want to achieve, then I transform it.

   -Into what?

Daniel said with disbelief. 

   -I infused the lotion you use with wolfsbane… It’s harmless for you but if you encounter a wolf, he wouldn’t be able to detect your scent…

   -The catnip…

Daniel said… He wasn’t fond of it… Something was making him mad.

   -I don’t use the catnip in cats… 

   -What does Eva take?

   -I drank wolfsbane…

-Isn't it dangerous for wolves? How could you?

David said as he stood up.

-I made the doses, it isn't lethal if it's taken in the right amounts…

-What you are doing goes against nature!

Daniel said as he stood up and crashed a lamp with his hands. Maria tried to calm him down… but he was way out of control. “Zeus” “On it.” I felt the heat and when I opened my eyes everything was clearer, I saw a glass flying and I caught in mid-air.

   -Daniel that’s enough.

Everyone's eyes were on me now.

   -No I won’t stop now… You are planning to do that to my brother right?

   -Daniel…

As I spoke Lucas tried to calm him down and grabbed him by the shoulder I took a step towards him. He shakes Lucas' arms and also takes a step towards me. 

   -You are planning to give my brother that thing… or am I wrong? That’s what you were talking about with Maria right? That if you had Eva and my brother on it wouldn’t be a risk. Or what were you trying to prevent? Because in no way David is taking that poison!

   -What is Daniel implying Gabe?

Eva said while walking towards me… I extended my hand to her and she took it. I kept my eyes on David, he looked confused and scared but I couldn’t see possessiveness. I hugged Eva and gave her a kiss on top of her head. I sighed… It was a relief.

   -Eva…

As I spoke Eva took a step forward to Daniel.

   -I don’t want to find my mate, I…

   -Why?

David said… Is he heartbroken? Could there be a mate bond?

   -I want to be with the one I chose and I choose Gabe.

   -Wait so you have been taking that thing for years just to keep you from finding your mate?

Daniel said with a calmer voice but a shocked look.

   -Yes.

   -That's insane… Wait so you are saying that if you are Dave’s mate you still want to be with Gabriel?

Eva looked at me and squeezed my hand.

   -Yes.

My eyes were on David.

   -Why would she be my mate now and not before?

Maria looked at us and we all got back into our previous places.

   -With her wolf sleeping she can’t find her mate, now that they are both awake, she can look for it… Maple can find him now… So not that she is your mate now but since your wolf and lion haven't met it's a possibility that you or your brother could be Eva’s mate?

   -Why just us? Couldn’t now she be mated to Gabriel or Lucas?

Daniel said… I looked back at David and he was just watching Eva.

   -And how can I know that?

Everyone in the room became quiet and looked at David.

   -Now what?

I said.

   -If she is my mate?

   -You just feel it, your world clicks, and then she appears, she is the meaning of perfection… Her scent is unbelievable and the way she moves… Her entire self is just tattooed into your eyes and if you close them she is there… but when you see her you don’t want to blink because she is there… And you are willing to be anything for her… Your wolf… Would you just want to take her there at that moment and every breath you take without her it’s painful and makes your other part crazy… You need to control that because you don’t want to hurt her… You need to be stronger than your wolf… His feelings will mix with yours and you would lose sight for a while but you need to control that instinct, you won’t gain anything by doing what you feel if she doesn't want to be with you… Forcing her it’s not an option… it doesn't matter how slow it kills you… She comes first…

As Lucas spoke, his face was lit up, his smile was bigger than ever and his voice was full of hope… but that changed the more he spoke the light faded away, he ended speaking with his eyes closed and clenching his fist. I didn't feel the pain but I could see Lucas shivering. I felt a link in my mind. 

   -”Did he…”

I closed the link with Daniel, it was not my story to tell. I turned to see Eva, she was looking at me, with heartbroken eyes… Could that be what she felt too when she found out we were not mates? A sudden movement made me look back at Lucas. He was now standing up.

   -I need some air.

He said as he walked to the door and left. An awkward silence made the atmosphere heavy… I wasn’t sure what to say… 

   -I will go and check on him…

Maria said not very convinced.

   -You want to go?

I also stood up and looked at her.

   -I don’t know…

As she spoke she started crying. I went and hugged her. That was not like her… She is usually very determined and for her to be hesitant was not like her. I knew we hadn't spoken about the serum and all but I never thought the wounds would still be this open. Eva started crying and the twins just looked at each other really uncomfortable. I wasn’t sure what to say… Sam was the one that handled this type of situation. I just stayed there without moving, I just hugged Maria and looked at Eva crying. Finally, Maria pushed me a bit.

   -I’m better… Go and check up on Lucas…

   -What should I say…

   -He is your best friend Gabe…

I wasn’t sure what to do… but she looked as she was about to start crying again. I walked out of the department and went to the stairs. As I left the building I saw him lying against the wall.

   -Hey, are you alright?

   -I’m fine…

I went and stood next to him with my back at the wall.

   -You don’t look fine.

He cleaned some tears from his cheeks.

   -I just needed some air.

   -Okay…

I kept looking at the street, the cars passing by and the people walking by… Then I notice something… a young kid watching us? I grabbed Lucas' arm and pulled him inside the building. “Zeus, do you think that kid was looking at us?” “I don’t know Gabe, he was looking towards us but he didn’t smell like a wolf.” “What if he was using wolfsbane?” “Then I couldn’t know if he was a wolf.”

   -What’s wrong Gabe…

   -We are not safe here… 

   -What?

I kept pushing him until we entered the department. I saw Maria with red eyes, Eva still crying and the twins more confused than ever. I ran and took the lotion that had wolfsbane.

   -Twins come with me! Eva, please try to control your emotions, Lucas and Maria’s safety is in your hands! Also, try to mindlink me so we stay in contact. Maria, Lucas and Eva, you are staying here pack everything we are leaving this place now!

   -What's happening?

   -There's no time to explain…

I opened the door and then everyone was looking at me with confusion.

   -Twins let's go!

They ran outside… Maria ran at me and grabbed my arm. I knew she wasn't letting go until I explained.

   -I think we are being watched, we need to go to a safer place… I will try to go and find their hiding place and look for Sam…

   -HOW ARE YOU GONNA DO THAT?

Maria shouted at me.

   -By sniffing them out…

   -If they know we are here they are using catnip and you or the twins wouldn’t be able to find them.

Maria was right, I didn't think about that… 

   -” CHANGE OF PLANS! DAVID COME BACK!”

I saw the twins coming up the stairs.

   -David you are staying here, keep Maria and Lucas safe, help them pack. Eva, you are coming with us.

   -REALLY?

   -REALLY?

   -REALLY!

Both the twins and Eva said at the same time.

   -Yes, Eva’s sense of smell isn’t affected by the catnip, and Lucas and Maria need protection and with this, each of you pack up one room, so it’s a good plan. Let's go!

   -Wait are we leaving David here?

   -Yes, Daniel and we need to get going now! Eva come on!

   -What's the plan then?

Daniel said, looking at me…

   -Eva we need to go!

   -I just want to brush my hair…

   -No we are leaving!

   -Why are we bringing her?

   -She is the only one that can actually smell the werewolf scent if it’s masked with catnip so we are bringing her with us! EVA!

   -I’m going!

She said but I couldn’t see her.

   -Come on Eva! The place isn’t that big!

As Daniel shouted, Eva opened her door and looked at him with daggers. She walked and stood right in front of Daniel.

   -You have no right or authority to order me or even raise your voice at me. My mother has alpha blood which means I have alpha blood in my veins, you? You are not at my level!

Daniel looked mad but still, he lowered his head a bit and said nothing back. Eva let a low growl out and then turned and looked at me with a big smile.

   -I’m ready now, let’s go!

Her smiles gave me chills. She was really mad just a few seconds ago… “Gabe, we don't have time! Let's move!”
