Chapter 5: The Challenge and the Warning

1078 Words
The next day, Evans arrived at the university. Today was strictly practicals and taking histories. He had made a quick revision at home very early in the morning. He was one of the most intelligent students in his former university before he was transferred here. As he arrived in front of the lecture hall, every eye fell on him. He halted then turned his gaze to the hall stage. Those bullies. They were there and they had menacing looks on their faces. Evans summoned courage and walked in. “Hey, boy.” He paused then shifted his gaze to the direction of the voice. A tall and bulky guy came forward, he had been standing behind the other boys. His hair was dyed orange and his hands were in his pockets. “You must be the new boy who stood against my boys, aren’t you?” Edward inquired, his eyes scanning Evans. “And you must be Edward? It is a shame that your friends rely on you before they can beat someone up. Bunch of cowards.” Evans retorted and the group’s expression hardened while the students watching gasped. Edward gave out a faint laugh as he walked toward Evans steadily. “I like this boy.” As he got to Evans’s front, his expression became unreadable. “You will fit into our group. You are bold and that's what we’re looking for.” Evans scoffed and then leaned forward. “Stop fooling around and face your studies. Your parents' position might not save you one day.” Edward furrowed his brows and then said in a low tone. “I know what you are.” Evans raised an eyebrow. “What?” “Let’s meet..tomorrow at the basketball court.” He answered back then patted Evans on his shoulder but Evans shook it off instantly. “Play nice or I might kill you without anyone knowing.” Evans watched as Edward walked away, whistling. “You can continue with your lecture,” Edward said to the quiet lecturer sitting in one of the students’ seats. Evans' eyes gleamed with hatred as the group left, they all bumped into him as they left the lecture hall. “What the hell is happening here?” Jasmine demanded from behind. She had also just arrived as the group left. Without a response, Evans walked up to his seat followed by Jasmine. The lecturer began his lectures as if nothing had happened. “Hey. What did they say to you? That's Edward, isn't it?” Jasmine questioned softly. Evans' eyes remained on the lecturer. “I am talking to you… “Would you keep quiet?” Evans cut in as he turned his gaze to hers. “Mind your business and stay out of mine.” Jasmine froze. Taken back his cold reply but instead of getting angry, her expression softened and she said in a low tone. “Life is hard on all of us. If you need someone to share things with, you can talk to me.” Evans scoffed. “Life is hard on all of us? You're an heiress, madam lecturer. Now, for the last time, mind your business and stay out of mine. Okay?” Jasmine exhaled softly and then turned her gaze to the table. Evans could barely pay attention to the lecture. I know what you are. What does he mean? Does he know he can see visions? That's impossible. From the corner of his eyes, he could see that Jasmine was not writing nor was she listening. She wasn't even looking at the lecturer, her gaze was somewhere else. It was fixed on the window. He followed her gaze and that was when he saw her. At first, there was nothing but he saw her. The girl who breezed past him yesterday. Standing outside the lecture hall and curling her hair with her finger. She was chewing gum as if she had all the time in the world. Clad in all black. Her arms were crossed and their gaze met. She waved at him then smiled sweetly. Evans’s breath hitched as Jasmine turned her gaze to meet his. He quickly looked away. How long has she been there? He had been trying to search for yesterday but couldn't find her. He mustered the courage and then shifted his gaze back to the girl. Thankfully, Jasmine had focused her attention on the lecturer. The girl in an all-black outfit tilted her head then motioned for him to come out. Evans frowned. She must have known that he had been looking for her. Without thinking further, Evans stood up. The chair scraped lightly against the floor, calling glances on him. “Where are you going?, young man?” The lecturer inquired. “I..I need some air.” He replied and walked out of the hall before anyone could question him any further. As he stepped outside, the cold air hit his face. She was not standing by the window…she had breezed past him again…as if she had such supernatural abilities. “You missed me..again.” The voice came from behind and he turned quickly. Her hands were tucked in her jacket and her eyes were fixed on him with great intensity. “Why were you spying on me?” Evans questioned, his tone laced with curiosity. Her expression remained unreadable. “So,” She stepped toward, her heels clicking on the floor. “You have met Edward.” Evans narrowed his eyes. “It seems you know him too well.” “Nope.” She replied then her expression turned serious. “I just know he's not like the others and neither are you.” “What are you talking about?” A faint smile appeared on her lips. “You shouldn’t still be in denial…not after what had happened to your sister.” Evans’s expression hardened. “What do you know about my sister?” She raised her hands in the air then chuckled. “Calm down, four eyes. There is a lot you don't know and you really don’t want to mess with me. Not when you've not found your true self.” Evans clenched his fists. “If you are going to continue to speak in riddles…I’m out of here.” “Tomorrow.” She began and he halted. “Don’t go to the basketball court alone…not when you're still a weakling.” “You think I'm scared of him?”
