Chapter 4 – Lord’s Vulnerability
The evening candles flickered in the grand chamber, casting long shadows across the high stone walls. Aeliana sat quietly on the edge of the velvet-covered chaise, her hands folded neatly in her lap. She had returned from her walk by the lake, trying to calm the storm of emotions swirling inside her. Kai’s presence lingered in her thoughts, the memory of his laughter and the warmth of his touch refusing to fade.
The door creaked open, and Kaelith stepped inside. His tall frame filled the doorway, his cloak trailing behind him like a shadow that had grown too long. Usually, his presence brought only tension and fear—a constant reminder that she was his, taken without consent. But tonight, something in his eyes made her pause.
“Good evening, my lady,” he said softly, his voice lower than usual. There was no anger in it, no sharp edge—only a quiet vulnerability that made Aeliana’s chest tighten.
“Good evening, lord,” she replied, cautious. Her instincts told her to be polite but distant. After all, he had taken everything from her except her heart, and she had no intention of surrendering that.
Kaelith approached, slowly, almost hesitantly, and for the first time, he did not reach for her as if he were claiming her, but simply stood beside her, silent, his gaze fixed on her face.
“I… I know you do not love me,” he began, his voice barely above a whisper. “I know that I have taken everything from you but your heart. And I… I cannot bear it anymore.”
Aeliana’s heart skipped. This was not the Kaelith who demanded obedience, who ruled with authority and fear. This was a man stripped of arrogance, exposed in a way she had never seen before.
“My lord…” she started, unsure how to respond.
“Shh,” he interrupted gently, his hand brushing against hers, not in ownership, but in desperate need. “Do not speak. Please… let me show you what I have become without your love.”
Before she could protest, he stepped closer and wrapped his arms around her. His large body was warm and firm, yet beneath the surface, there was trembling, a vulnerability that took her breath away. Tears pricked the corners of his eyes, uncharacteristic for the man who had always appeared so in control.
“I… I have been a monster,” he confessed, his voice cracking. “I have taken you by force, married you without your consent. I have demanded obedience, claimed your body, and yet I have nothing of your heart. I thought… I thought that if I had everything else, I could make you mine in time. But I cannot. I cannot bear to live like this.”
Aeliana swallowed hard, her throat tight. She had always known that Kaelith could be cruel, ruthless, even terrifying, but never had she imagined that beneath the power and dominance, there existed a man capable of such raw, unfiltered emotion.
“I… I cannot give you what you want,” she said softly, careful not to let her voice waver too much. “You have everything else. I… I cannot force my heart to love you.”
He buried his face in her neck, trembling as he inhaled her scent, grounding himself in her presence. His hands gripped her arms gently but with desperation. “I’ll give you anything,” he whispered hoarsely, his voice shaking with emotion. “Anything. I will give you the world if you… if you just… if you just love me back. I will stop being a monster. I will treat you like a queen. I will—”
The sobs overtook him. He pressed his forehead to her shoulder, shivering, and for the first time, Aeliana realized that this man, so commanding and merciless, was capable of breaking entirely.
She did not pull away, though her heart ached with sympathy. His pain was real, raw, and human. She could feel the tremors of his body through the fabric of her dress, the shaky inhale and exhale, the trembling hands that had so often been a source of fear and control.
“I cannot love you,” she whispered again, gently, almost as if speaking to herself. “You have my obedience, my trust in certain things, but my heart… it does not belong to you. You cannot force it.”
His sobs grew louder, shaking his entire frame. He pulled back slightly, enough to look at her, eyes glistening with tears. “You’re right,” he admitted, voice broken. “I took you by force, and everything I have demanded of you… it has been wrong. But I cannot help this pain inside me. I cannot help that I… I wanted to be loved by you, truly loved.”
Aeliana’s own eyes blurred with emotion. She saw not a tyrant, not a monster, but a man who had misunderstood his own heart for so long, who had tried to claim what could never be taken by force.
Kaelith’s hands trembled as he reached for her one last time, brushing a strand of hair from her face. “I… I am sorry,” he whispered. “I am so sorry, Aeliana. I will leave you, if that is what you wish. I will not force you anymore. But know this… every day without your love is agony, and I… I am lost in it.”
He left her then, turning away with a painful grace, the heavy weight of his emotions lingering in the room like a ghost. Aeliana remained seated, staring at the empty doorway, her heart heavy with empathy but resolute in her decision. She could not return his feelings. Her heart was no longer hers to give freely, not to him—not while Kai existed, a boy who had shown her laughter, companionship, and a warmth that the lord’s power could never provide.
That night, she found herself walking to the lake once again, seeking the solace of quiet water and the faint hope that Kai would be there. The memory of Kaelith’s vulnerability lingered, a complex mixture of fear, pity, and sorrow, but it did not change the truth of her heart.
Kai, waiting at their usual spot, saw her approach and rose to meet her with a soft, questioning smile. She returned it faintly, her steps hesitant, and he reached for her hand instinctively, guiding her to the grassy edge of the lake.
“You’re here,” he said softly. “I was… worried.”
She let him hold her hand, the simple gesture grounding her, reminding her of the world she could choose. And in that quiet moment, the weight of the lord’s pain and the safety she felt with Kai coexisted uneasily in her mind.
Kaelith’s plea had shown her a side of him she could not have imagined—the loneliness behind the dominance, the desperation behind the power. But it had also solidified her heart’s decision. She belonged, in spirit and in love, to no one but herself… and, secretly, to Kai.
