Chapter Six – The hidden base Amara’s legs felt like lead, but her mind ran restless. She kept replaying Diego’s betrayal in her head the way he slipped away with Helix without a backward glance. She had fought beside him, trusted him, and in a single heartbeat, he had chosen their enemies over their bond. Liam walked beside her, scanning every corner with sharp eyes. “Forget him,” he muttered, catching the storm on her face. “Some people aren’t fighting for survival they’re fighting for themselves. And selfishness will kill them sooner than the virus ever will.” I want to take you to our inner base when we keep the children and women and the older men as well Amara said nothing, but inside her chest burned a mixture of anger and confusion. Amara was then taken to the main base where the rest of the survivors are , the base was a very big hall that contains hundreds of people with children “Welcome to Haven,” Liam announced as he pushed open the steel gate. Amara froze once she stepped inside. Life. Real life. The interior buzzed with activity survivors moving about, carrying food, tending fires, mending clothes. Solar lamps glowed faintly, illuminating makeshift houses built from wood and scrap. The air smelled of smoke, cooked stew, and sweat, but it was alive. She saw children playing in one corner, women patching torn jackets, men reinforcing walls. It was not just survival. It was community. But as she walked through, she felt eyes on her. Whispers followed her steps. “Is that her?” “She doesn’t look sick…” “They said she’s different.” Amara’s heartbeat quickened. She turned to Liam, confused. “What are they talking about?” Before Liam could answer, The crowd stirred, their whispers now rising like a wave. “She’s the one…” “She could be the cure…” “She’s our chance.” “ for them to lead her through the first base she must’ve be the one “ Amara shook her head violently. “No. No, I’m not a cure. I was told a helix doctor said this we will find her and I promise you we will surely produce the cure for every … I just… I will try my best and make sure to save lives!” A woman’s gaze softened, though her voice carried weight. “And maybe you did. But whether you wanted it or not, you are the difference between survival and extinction. You may be the key to ending this.” Amara staggered back, her knees weakening until she sank onto a wooden bench. The survivors leaned closer, eyes filled with desperate hope. She felt their stares like chains pressing against her shoulders. “I’m not a savior , I’m only immune ,” Amara whispered, more to herself than anyone else. “I’m just… me.” But deep inside, she felt something else: the heavy pull of destiny. Not everyone shared the same faith. From the corner of the crowd, a man spat on the ground. “Or maybe she’s the reason this all began. Helix made her what if she’s one of them? What if she’s dangerous?” Others nodded uneasily. Hope mixed with suspicion, creating a tense air that clung to every word spoken. Liam silenced them with a sharp wave of her hand. “Enough. Haven does not turn away miracles when they come.we discuss this issue in the first base before coming here and we’ve explain lot of things to her already I just want her to see and believe in what she is fighting for and see the people, children she can saved by believing that she is truly the cure ” Then, to Amara: “Rest. Eat. We will speak more at dawn.” Reluctantly, the crowd dispersed, though many still glanced back at her with eyes filled with equal parts awe and fear. Liam guided her to a small corner where a bed of blankets lay waiting. He crouched beside her. “Don’t let them scare you. We’ve all lost too much… when people see hope, it frightens them just as much as it inspires them.” Amara nodded faintly, though her thoughts were elsewhere. Her mind was spinning the doctor who defected, the immunity she carried, the possibility that her blood was the answer to the nightmare. But if that was true… Helix would never stop hunting her and she is also ready to fight helix That night, as Haven settled into uneasy sleep, Amara lay awake under the cracked ceiling, her heart pounding. Then she heard it. A faint noise beyond the walls. Not the groans of the infected but the steady crunch of boots on gravel. Her stomach dropped. Helix. They had found her.
