Bright sunshine evaporated the residual grey from the day before, fog replaced by crisp autumnal rays, and a stream of light through the blinds that nearly blinded me. Beside me, Andy slept, curled up in a ball. She murmured in her sleep, and my heart shattered as she cried, deep in slumber, clinging on to her pillow. I moulded myself around her, having spent most of the night sitting up, just watching them sleep, heightened hearing tuned in to every sound outside. And eyes trained on the mobile monitor that I kept beside the bed. At the time, maybe it had been overkill. Maybe I had turned this place into a fortress of kinds, but my trust in people had been at an all time low. And all that mattered now was keeping these two people safe.
