Chapter 4: Alice woke early the next morning, determined to continue her search for the “chamber of memories.” She felt a mix of excitement and anxiety, knowing she was inching closer to uncovering her family’s secrets. She returned to the grand study, where she had found the map and documents, and began to reexamine everything, hoping to find a clue she might have missed. The silence of the mansion was broken by the sudden creak of the front door. Alice’s heart skipped a beat. She wasn’t expecting anyone and the isolated location of the mansion meant that visitors were unlikely. She quickly hid the journal and documents, then cautiously made her way to the foyer. As she peered around the corner, she saw a tall, dark-haired man standing just inside the door, looking around with a mix of curiosity and determination. He appeared to be in his early thirties, dressed in casual yet practical clothes, and carrying a satchel slung over his shoulder.“Hello?” Alice called out, trying to keep her voice steady. The man turned to face her, his expression shifting to one of mild surprise. “Hello. I didn’t expect to find anyone here.”Alice stepped forward, trying to appear confident. “I could say the same. Who are you, and what are you doing here?”The man offered a polite smile. “My name is Lucas Bennett. I’m a historian, researching the Ravenswood family. I’ve been trying to get access to this mansion for months but had no luck until now.” He paused, studying Alice’s face. “And you are?” Alice Thompson,” she replied, still wary. “I inherited this mansion recently and decided to come and see it for myself.”Lucas raised an eyebrow. “Inherited? You must be a descendant of the Ravenswood family, then.”Alice nodded slowly, still unsure whether to trust him. “Yes, but I didn’t know anything about this place until I got a letter a few days ago. How did you get in?”“The door was unlocked,” Lucas explained. “I found the gates open and thought it was an opportunity to explore. I’m sorry if I intruded.”Alice considered his explanation. He seemed genuine enough, but she knew she needed to be cautious. “What exactly are you researching about my family?”Lucas hesitated, then reached into his satchel and pulled out a notebook. “The Ravenswoods were known for their wealth and influence in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, but there are many gaps in their history, particularly about a hidden treasure that’s rumored to be somewhere in this mansion.”Alice’s interest was piqued, but she kept her expression neutral. “I’ve heard some mentions of that treasure. Do you have any idea where it might be?”Lucas shook his head. “I’ve found references to it in various historical records, but nothing concrete. That’s why I’m here—to uncover the truth.”Alice realized that having an experienced historian like Lucas could be beneficial. If he was genuinely interested in the history and not just the treasure, they might be able to help each other. “Alright, Lucas. You can stay and help me, but no funny business. We share whatever we find.”Lucas smiled, clearly relieved. “Agreed. Thank you, Alice.”They spent the rest of the morning exploring the mansion together. Lucas proved to be knowledgeable and observant, pointing out details and symbols Alice had overlooked. They revisited the library, the study, and the hidden room beneath the garden shed, compiling their findings and discussing possible leads. In the afternoon, they took a break in the kitchen, sharing a simple meal and exchanging stories. Alice found herself warming up to Lucas, appreciating his expertise and enthusiasm. However, she remained cautious, knowing that the promise of treasure could bring out the worst in people. As they resumed their search, they heard a loud noise coming from the front of the mansion. It sounded like someone had forcibly opened the gates. Alice and Lucas exchanged a worried glance and hurried to the foyer.Standing in the doorway was a burly man with a menacing look in his eyes. He wore rugged clothes and had a backpack slung over his shoulder. He looked around the room with a sense of entitlement before his gaze landed on Alice and Lucas.“Well, well,” he sneered. “Looks like I’m not the only one interested in the Ravenswood treasure.”Alice felt a chill run down her spine. “Who are you?”The man stepped forward, his smile cold and calculating. “Name’s Marcus. Let’s just say I’ve been following the trail of this treasure for a while. And now that I’m here, I’m not leaving without it.”Lucas stepped protectively in front of Alice. “We don’t want any trouble. We’re just here to learn about the history of the mansion.”Marcus laughed, a harsh sound that echoed through the foyer. “History, huh? I’m not here for a history lesson. I’m here for the treasure. And I suggest you two get out of my way.”Alice’s mind raced. She knew they couldn’t let Marcus have free rein in the mansion. He was dangerous and motivated by greed. “We’re not leaving, Marcus. This mansion belongs to me, and I have every right to be here.”Marcus’s expression darkened. “You’ve got guts, I’ll give you that. But guts won’t find you the treasure. And if you get in my way, I won’t hesitate to make things difficult for you.”Before Alice could respond, Lucas spoke up. “Alright, Marcus. How about a compromise? We’ll all work together to find the treasure, and then we can split it. No one needs to get hurt.”Marcus seemed to consider this for a moment, then nodded reluctantly. “Fine. But I’m watching you two. Try anything funny, and you’ll regret it.”With an uneasy truce established, Alice, Lucas, and Marcus continued their search together. The tension was palpable, and Alice knew they had to stay vigilant. As they explored the mansion, she couldn’t shake the feeling that the real danger was yet to come. The day ended with no major discoveries, and they agreed to continue their search in the morning. As Alice lay in bed that night, she realized she had made allies and enemies in her quest for the Ravenswood legacy. The journey ahead was uncertain, but she was determined to see it through to the end.
