The school parking lot is chaotic.
Parents are rushing to collect their children after the lockdown announcement. Cars honking. Teachers are trying to maintain order while police officers direct traffic.
Aria's hands shake as she grips the steering wheel, her heart hammering against her ribs.
Sophie's preschool called twenty minutes ago.
"There was an incident," the director had said carefully. "A man tried to pick up Sophie, claiming to be her father. We followed protocol and called the police, but I think you should come immediately."

The restraining order she filed yesterday apparently means nothing to him.
"Mrs. Vale?" A police officer approaches her car as she parks. "I'm Officer Martinez. We spoke on the phone."
