As usual, Laura arrived at work right on time, but something felt off the moment she stepped through the doors. It might have been her imagination, but Mia at the reception desk—usually warm and welcoming—seemed to have a frozen smile on her face today. Throughout her school years, Laura had endured mockery and exclusion, and as an adult, she had few female friends. Mia, with her sweet looks and friendly demeanor, had been a pleasant exception.
