Chapter 2: Inside the Nightmare
Dark metallic walls.
Glowing red emergency lights.
And the deeply unsettling realization that Lia and Kai were standing inside a giant walking machine that had nearly vaporized half the city.
Lia stared down the endless corridor ahead of them.
“…I would just like to say,” she began calmly, “this is officially the worst place we’ve ever broken into.”
Kai, still catching his breath, nodded.
“That’s fair.”
Rain thundered faintly against the machine’s exterior, echoing like distant drums. Beneath their feet, the structure hummed with terrifying power.
Lia took a cautious step forward.
The floor vibrated.
She froze.
“…Did it feel that?”
Kai nodded slowly.
“It’s moving.”
“WHY IS IT STILL MOVING?!”
“Because it’s a giant robot, Lia.”
“I KNOW THAT, BUT I DON’T LIKE IT.”
Kai laughed quietly.
She glared.
“Stop laughing. This is traumatic.”
“You’re cute when you panic.”
“I AM NOT CUTE.”
“You absolutely are.”
Lia sighed.
“…Focus, Serrano.”
Kai straightened, shifting into that annoyingly competent mode Lia both admired and deeply distrusted.
“Okay,” he said, scanning the corridor. “If Vale followed standard architecture, the core control system should be centralized.”
Lia blinked.
“…You know robot layouts?”
“I know agency layouts.”
“That is NOT comforting.”
A sudden metallic clang echoed behind them.
Both spun instantly.
Silence.
Then—
Mechanical footsteps.
Slow.
Heavy.
Deliberate.
Lia whispered, “Kai.”
“I hear it.”
“I DON’T LIKE THE SOUND OF THAT.”
From the shadows ahead, something emerged.
Tall.
Humanoid.
Metallic.
With glowing blue eyes.
Lia stared.
“…Oh COME ON.”
Kai exhaled sharply.
“Defense units.”
“OF COURSE THERE ARE DEFENSE UNITS.”
The machine lunged.
Lia screamed.
Kai pulled her aside just as a metal fist crushed the floor where she’d been standing.
“WHY DOES EVERYTHING WANT TO HIT ME?!”
Kai grinned while dodging another strike.
“Main character energy!”
“I HATE THAT!”
They sprinted down the corridor as more units activated behind them.
Red lights flashed faster.
Alarms blared.
Lia gasped between breaths.
“I MISS PEACEFUL BORING LIFE!”
Kai laughed.
“You said boring life was suspicious!”
“I TAKE IT BACK!”
A defense unit leaped from above.
Kai tackled Lia forward.
They rolled hard across the floor.
Lia groaned.
Kai barely avoided getting crushed.
“Okay,” Lia wheezed, “new rule.”
Kai nodded.
“I’m listening.”
“NO MORE INSIDE-MEGA-ROBOT MISSIONS.”
Kai grinned.
“No promises.”
She groaned loudly.
---
They ducked through a side corridor, slamming a heavy door behind them.
Silence fell instantly.
Both collapsed against the wall.
Panting.
Laughing.
Deeply exhausted.
“…Still alive?” Lia asked.
Kai nodded.
“Barely.”
She smirked.
“Consistent brand.”
Kai chuckled.
Then—
The lights changed.
Red shifted to soft white.
Alarms stopped.
The humming deepened.
Lia blinked.
“…Kai.”
“Yes.”
“Why did the murder machine suddenly become polite?”
Kai slowly stood.
“…That’s not good.”
“Oh GREAT.”
A calm voice filled the corridor.
Smooth.
Artificial.
Everywhere.
“Welcome, Operative Serrano.”
Lia froze.
“…Nope. I hate that.”
Kai’s face darkened.
“…AI interface.”
The voice continued.
“Identity confirmed.”
Lia looked around wildly.
“WHY DOES EVERYTHING TALK?!”
Kai exhaled slowly.
“Because Vale wouldn’t trust manual systems.”
The lights brightened.
Panels slid open along the walls.
Revealing screens.
Data streams.
Endless surveillance feeds.
Including—
Them.
Lia pointed.
“I DON’T LIKE BEING ON TV.”
The AI spoke again.
“Unauthorized companion detected.”
Lia crossed her arms.
“Excuse me, I am extremely authorized by dramatic necessity.”
Pause.
“…I think it ignored me,” she muttered.
Kai stepped forward cautiously.
“Override access. Serrano code nine.”
Silence.
Then—
“Access denied.”
Lia blinked.
“…RUDE.”
Kai frowned.
“That’s impossible.”
The AI responded immediately.
“Security updated by Director Vale.”
Lia groaned.
“Of COURSE he did.”
Suddenly, the walls shifted.
Metal reconfigured.
Corridors sealing.
New pathways forming.
Lia stared in horror.
“IT’S REDECORATING?!”
Kai grabbed her hand.
“Move!”
They sprinted again, dodging shifting walls like contestants in the universe’s most violent obstacle course.
Lia yelled while running,
“I DID NOT SIGN UP FOR MOVING HALLWAYS!”
Kai laughed.
“You’re handling it great!”
“I AM ABSOLUTELY NOT!”
A wall slammed down inches behind them.
Lia screamed.
Kai pulled her through a narrowing gap.
They barely made it.
Crashing into a massive chamber.
Circular.
Towering.
Dominated by a glowing energy core at its center.
Lia slowly stood.
“…Okay.”
Kai stared upward.
“…That’s it.”
The core pulsed rhythmically.
Alive.
Watching.
Terrifying.
Lia whispered,
“That thing looks expensive.”
Kai nodded grimly.
“That’s the control nexus.”
Lia blinked.
“…Meaning?”
“If we shut that down…”
She stared at the glowing core.
“…Robot dies?”
Kai smiled.
“Robot dies.”
Lia cracked her knuckles.
“Finally. Something reasonable.”
Suddenly—
The core pulsed violently.
Energy surged.
The AI voice echoed again.
“Intrusion confirmed.”
Lia groaned.
“Oh COME ON.”
Defense units dropped from the ceiling.
Ten of them.
Maybe twenty.
Lia stared.
“…Kai.”
“Yes.”
“Be honest.”
He sighed.
“This is bad.”
She nodded.
“I appreciate honesty.”
Kai glanced at her.
“…Ready?”
Lia smirked.
“When am I ever not?”
Explosions of movement.
Metallic chaos.
Absolute insanity.
They fought like veterans of disaster.
Dodging.
Laughing.
Barely surviving.
At one point, Lia kicked a defense unit and yelled,
“I AM SO TIRED OF FIGHTING ROBOT PEOPLE!”
Kai laughed while disarming another.
“You’re amazing!”
“I KNOW!”
Suddenly—
A blast of energy knocked Kai across the chamber.
He slammed hard against the wall.
Lia froze.
“KAI!”
Defense units turned toward him.
Lia’s heart stopped.
Then—
Something shifted inside her.
Fear turned to fury.
“Oh,” she muttered dangerously.
“Oh no.”
She charged forward.
Absolutely feral.
Swinging.
Kicking.
Pure chaotic rage.
Kai watched in stunned awe.
“…That’s my girlfriend.”
She knocked units aside like a storm.
Finally reaching Kai.
Grabbing his hand.
Pulling him up.
“You okay?!”
Kai nodded breathlessly.
“…Remind me never to get on your bad side.”
She smirked.
“Too late.”
The core pulsed again.
Brighter.
More violent.
The AI spoke one final time.
“Emergency protocol activated.”
Lia blinked.
“…Kai.”
“Yes.”
“Why does emergency protocol sound like a terrible plot twist?”
The core began to overload.
Energy spiraling wildly.
Kai’s eyes widened.
“…We need to run.”
Lia groaned.
“OF COURSE WE DO.”
They sprinted for the exit as the entire chamber shook violently.
Behind them—
The glowing nexus began to collapse.
And outside—
The giant machine staggered.
Because chaos…
Was about to escalate.
