All around me a strange assortment of run-down and sparkling new apartment towers framed the road, their thousands of windows gleaming in the sun like urban jewels. And every free space between was coated with thick, vibrant green mazes of trees, palms, and exotic plants. Insects buzzed between broad leaves, and a slight breeze had the greenery lazily sway in the breeze. This place was… something else. Growing up in the US, we loved to joke about living in concrete jungles. But this? The air sticky with car smoke reek, but also exotically sweet from the flowers all around, and salty with the tell-tale tang of a nearby sea, this was what a mix of a city and a jungle looked like, felt like.
