Then, in an eye blink, he stood in front of me with his back to the flames, and as the blast hit us, he pressed his body to mine, wrapping his arm around me. His smile was gone, replaced by focus. Magic surged around us, his and my amulets activating, and we fell to the ground when the blast hit us. His arm cracked under our combined weight, and I lost my breath when he landed on me.
