I couldn’t resist a laugh. “If it was, you wouldn’t have sent for me.”
“I’m still considering sending someone else.” He looked me in the eye. “I have no right to ask you to risk your life.”
“No, you don’t.” I returned his stare. “But you can offer me a job and pay for it. You know I have the best chance of surviving a trip to the Court and returning.”
“That’s assuming the Court didn’t have a hand in that bombing.” His hands curled into fists. “If it’s their play, I’d be sending you to your death.”
I bit my lip. If only I could tell Albert about the Snake and the outside threat, but I felt Eithne wouldn’t accept the extraordinary circumstances as an excuse for revealing her secret. “Eithne needs me,” I said instead. “I don’t think she’d kill me.”
