Chapter 9

258 Words
CHAPTER 9 Shannon sat with her head on the cool steering wheel. He was good, she had to admit. Lucas had breezed back in from the kitchen a few minutes later, greeted Isaac with a wave and Jenna with a hug, and proceeded to pass around the plate of cookies. Isaac seemed to accept that he had dropped by for a taste-test and Sara had talked him into staying until bedtime, thank goodness. Shannon had no idea how he would respond to the idea of her and Lucas together, but they didn’t need to cross that bridge right now. Right now, her mind wanted to avoid Lucas at all costs, and her body wanted to get up close and personal… and stay there. She was pretty sure Jenna was on to something. But she didn’t know her well enough to gauge if she’d say anything to Isaac. They had made small talk while they tasted cookies and listened to Jenna talk about the movie they’d gone to see, and then as soon as possible made their excuses and got into their separate cars without speaking to each other. Lucas had pulled out first, and she’d followed his taillights all the way back to town, her hands shaking and her heart beating a little too fast. Now, she was sitting in her car outside their building, although Lucas was already inside and up the stairs. She needed a minute to think. Would he be waiting for her? Did she want him to be? She took a deep breath and got out of the car. Only one way to find out.
