Lena The room tilted. Maybe not literally. But that was how it felt. Mason. Missing. The word refused to settle inside my head. I stared at the photograph in Kane’s hand. My brother. Blindfolded. Alive. At least… he looked alive. My throat tightened. No. No, no, no. This wasn’t happening. The apartment suddenly felt too small. Too crowded. Police moved around us collecting evidence while cold air drifted through the open doorway. And all I could hear was— Tell her what happened to Ava. Or Mason pays for your silence. I looked at Kane. His face had gone pale. Not shocked. Haunted. And somehow that terrified me more. “What does it mean?” My voice sounded strange. Thin. He looked at the photo again. Then folded it slowly. Too slowly. “Kane.” Still no answer.
