You were right. A night away did help and I won’t lie—it felt good to kill those people. But I can’t say I didn’t think of her most of the time. It’s tough to be away. At home I can watch her on the monitor. It helps me feel at ease about leaving her all alone in that room. But away from home, where I can’t see her, well, my mind runs wild. Literally. I obsess, wondering what she’s doing—if she’s hungry— if she’s missing me, too. I kept imagining that I’d stayed in. Like an old film, the images kept playing in my mind. I put the kids to bed, made popcorn, she and I took in a movie, but not the chick flick kind, because we aren’t shallow like that. No, it was something deep, something we’d spend hours dissecting and discussing until it turned into an all-nighter. A slumber party— the kind
