“It will heal, Lydia. Everything heals.” This makes me angry. She isn’t supposed to be in here, and she shouldn’t have come, no matter how glad I am to see her. It’s only going to make things worse. “Why do you have to do what he says anyway?” She considers my question for a moment and then she lowers her gaze. “Sometimes the only way to know one’s enemy is to get really close,” she says and she sucks in her bottom lip. She mumbles something about fire I can’t make out. “You have to get close enough to the fire to get burned. Close enough to let it kill you, my child.” I don’t understand what she means, my legs hurt too bad to try, and in any case, she rarely makes a lot of sense anyway.
