“I know. I’m sorry…” Sophia says, and she stares at Anne. Anne walks over to her husband and takes the cigarette from his mouth. “What did I tell you about smoking?” she asks and she eyes him intently but I can’t discern whether it’s a look of contempt or not. When he doesn’t answer she turns and walks back over to where Sophia is sitting in the chair. She reaches down and presses the cigarette to Sophia’s forearm, essentially putting out the flame. Even from where I’m standing I can see tears well up in Sophia’s eyes but she doesn’t flinch and she doesn’t make a sound. “Well, at least this one doesn’t scream…” Stanley sighs, and it draws my attention back to him.
