Chapter Two– Whispers of the Past

484 Words
Ethan couldn’t focus all day. Every class, every passing face blurred. All he could think about was Maya her laugh, the way her hair caught the sunlight, the soft warmth in her voice that made his chest tighten. He pulled out his phone and dialed Cole, needing to share, to process, to hear a familiar voice. “Hey man,” Cole answered, casual. “Dude… I met someone last night,” Ethan said, almost tripping over his words. “Maya. She’s… I don’t know, something about her” Cole’s voice changed, almost imperceptibly. A sharp edge crept into his tone. “Wait… Maya? This is the girl?” “Yeah,” Ethan said, excitement and nervousness mingling. “We had dinner. I think… I like her, Cole. I really like her.” There was a pause on the line. Then Cole’s voice softened, just enough to mask his frustration. “Huh. She’s… special, I guess. But are you sure you know what you’re getting into?” “I… I don’t know,” Ethan admitted. “I just know I want to find out. I want to understand her, get to know her. I can’t stop thinking about her.” Cole let out a low sigh. “Man… be careful. That girl… she’s complicated. You’ll see.” Ethan frowned, sensing an undertone he didn’t understand. “Okay… thanks.” Meanwhile, across town, Maya sat in her room, replaying the evening in her mind. Dinner had been… different. Warm, engaging, a little exhilarating but there was something in Ethan’s eyes that made her cautious. Her phone buzzed. A message from Lina: So… what’s this about Ethan? Be careful. Don’t rush. Some things look good at first but aren’t what they seem. Maya raised an eyebrow. Lina had always been protective, but something in her tone made her pause. Protective or controlling? she wondered. “I don’t know,” Maya whispered to herself. “I like him… but maybe Lina’s right. Maybe I should wait.” Later, Cole leaned back in his chair, scrolling through his phone. He couldn’t stop thinking about Maya. Memories of their past came unbidden shared laughter, late night talks, quiet promises that had never lasted. And now, Ethan… this new guy, charming, kind, patient. Cole clenched his jaw. “So, this is him,” he muttered. “The one who thinks he can just… have her. Not if I can help it.” Cole didn’t know how he would act yet. He just knew he couldn’t let Ethan take what, in some corner of his heart, still felt like his. That night, Ethan and Maya exchanged texts, small, careful, playful. A smile crept across his face every time his phone buzzed. Maya stared at her own phone, conflicted. Part of her wanted to answer immediately, to tell Ethan everything she was feeling. Another part Lina’s voice echoing in her head urged caution.
