“I’m sorry,” he whispered, his voice harsh as he choked back a sob. “I’m sorry.” I took a deep breath and turned to him, stepping forward before crouching to his level. “You made your choice,” I said gently. “Here, we still have some time before the meeting. Take however long you need.” Hunter nodded and I stepped back, moving to the opposite side of the doorway. There I sat and waited for him in silence, hoping to offer some comfort by my presence alone. Sometime later, he nodded to me as he pulled himself up from the floor, and I led the way to the first meeting of our new movement. The inaugural session went well, though I had some difficulty keeping Hunter involved in the discussions because so many of them took place simultaneously across the link.
